The Minions: Rise of Gru was neither Minions, nor Rose, nor was it Gru.

TL;DR: the context of when Voltaire said this is important too.
By the time of Voltaire, though, the authority of the HRE-er was waning due to pressure from the surrounding states. The CC didn't have authority in a bunch of the states. And the Pope wouldn't be given a farthing if time in most of the northern part of the Empire. And only 28 years after V's death, it kinda just rolled over for Napoleon. What had been a bastion of relative peace in Europe for hundreds of years was at that point a rotting corpse.

these are genuinely all wrong

"Holy" denotes ordainement by God, and served to curb papal coronation practices
"Roman" stems from the fact that "Rex Romanorum" was the primary title of the Emperor
"Empire" was a claim of hegemony, derived from the mythological belief of "translatio imperii"

I don’t agree with it being an empire. The HRE was a very loose confederation and the emperor had virtually no authority over the different realms and estates within the confederation. The hundreds of kingdoms and estates were effectively independent states. The kingdoms and estates in the HRE also constantly fought wars with each other.

Also, It's not Empire, it's Realm (German: »Reich«). Empire is »Kaiserreich« in German.

Nah, the original dude was right and told the truth. Flash forward to now, and years of lies create new narrative.

@JoshSullivanHistory Are you going to continue to make more alternate history scenarios or are you taking a break or stopping entirely?

It was roman for like the first 200 years when they followed Roman Law but when they stopped following the roman law it stopped being roman.

It was not an Empire due to an Empire being a group of states or countries ruled by a SINGLE monarch, the HRE had several kings ruling their own German State like Prussia, Hannover, Saxony, Austria etc.

It was holy in name and name only. Why? Because of their clashes against the catholic church so as a F U to them called themselves Holy.

So Voltaire was right but also slightly wrong
