The Holy Roman Empire, also known as the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation after 1512, was a polity in Central and Western Europe, usually headed by the Holy Roman emperor. Charlemagne didn't crown "himself". He was famously crowned by pope Leo III. The story goes that he surprised Charlemagne with the coronation and that he didn't really want it... sure, Karl... sure

20:37 "That does not mean that there was not an emperor during this time period".
Yes, it does. There were kings but no emperor crowned by the pope, a distinction that was still quite important at the time.

As a South Carolina native, good choice doing it in February instead of later in the year. I couldn't imagine trying to wear chain or plate armor while dealing with 100 degree heat and 80 to 90% humidity, though I could picture it like being trapped in a crockpot.

the funniest thing is that 'The Bald" had so much hair. It was a sarcastic nickname.

"He wasn't the Holy Roman Emperor, he was King of the Romans."

If anything was going to get Julius, Augustus, Varus, and the 17th, 18th, and 19th legions to try for Germany again, that sentence right there would do it.

25:00 the Habsburg castle... That's funny, because Habsburg sounds like a southern german person would say "I have the castle!"
"Ih Hab's Burg!"

Keep in mind ya'll, the Hapsburgs are STILL around AND STILL in power. That family goes back insanely far, almost as far as C.E.

You might want to look into The Dutch Revolt. It is closely tied to the Fall of Habsburg influence.

25:48 Instead of "Italian wars" I heard the "Time wars". I thought for a moment the Doctor, timesheep or timesharks had to do with his death.
