Beginning with Charlemagne, the great and educated king who would serve as an inspiration for world leaders from Frederick II to Adolf Hitler, the Holy Roman Empire’s intricate ties with the Roman Catholic Church would provide for plenty of excitement and drama in its early years. However, as the empire staggered through the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance, it would eventually be forced to declare its allegiance with a new way of thinking: Protestantism.
Throughout the Holy Roman Empire story, a wealth of fascinating tales from interesting people proliferates. Monks and emperors will clash, poets sing the praises of kings, and the pope rides blind and bareback on a frightened donkey through the streets of Rome. The mightiest monarch in all of the world walks barefoot in the snow in repentance for his angry deeds, and two rival families stand toe-to-toe for the monarchy. Crusades are lost in war and won in diplomacy, while kings are held ransom, revolts are suppressed, and antipopes crowned.

1:02 The Eastern Romans never rebranded themselves. They always called themselves Romans up until the 19th century

The title of Holy Roman Empire was very important during the time of Henry VIII in the 1500s. Charles, the then current Holy Roman Emperor, was Catherine of Aragon’s nephew. Henry wanted to divorce her to marry Anne Boleyn. He applied to the Pope. There was no way the Pope was going to grant the divorce with Charles in power. This ultimately led to Henry breaking from the Catholic Church and making himself head of the Anglican Church. This led to England and eventually the United States becoming Protestant nations.

CORRECTIONS:
- Byzantium was renamed New Rome
- it was renamed Constantinople in tribute.
- the Schism was caused by far more factors than listed here, including Iconoclasm.
- Charlemagne was crowned by a Pope he installed and after this it was a title given to whoever defended The Pope.
- Otto I was the first HRE, his legitimacy was sourced to Charlemagne but the office as we understand it starts with him.
- The HRE was just called “the empire”, the “holy” part came in when emperors no longer needed papal approval to be elected.
- the Interregnum wasn’t caused by a lack of a HRE. This was a consequence.
- skipping over the Habsburg era is misleading and overlooks times considered peaks for the HRE.
- the HRE didn’t become German. It was always German. Charlemagne never changed his seal from “king of franks”. His people were proud Germanic Franks. The title of emperor was for Charlemagne as he was a king of kings.

Czechoslovakia? This must be an old video. It is currently the Czech Republic.

I'm watchin this out of spite. For whatever reason no matter how many times I open my phone or computer Youtube recommends me this, or another older video explaining the HRE. It has been at least a month and it's just ALWAYS there. Japanese Jazz, Lofi, Tiny House Building, Glassblowing, Old R&B Music, NBA Highlights/Breakdowns, all randomized and differing content.... then there is one... one who sits in the corner: "click on me" it says. "Learn about the Holy Roman Empire" it follows up. "But Video, I play Europa Universalis 4, I think I know!" "YOU DO NOT KNOW.... CLICK UPON ME". I have succumbed.

This is a good video, but it would be much better with a little less stock footage, and some more maps giving a visual to whats being said.

6:40 yes... but not that Burgundy. The kingdom of Burgundy was larger and more to the East and North. On the map is merely the French duchy of Burgundy

Rome is not a place, It's an adjective for the place where the seat of power resides.

One minute in, and I had to pause to look at the comments.

With so many corrections issued, I can’t really trust this, since I don’t know which things are wrong that they didn’t catch.

6:22 That's Henry II _of England._ Who absolutely did NOT die childless, lol- his huge tribe of kids were the bane of his existence, so that kinda cracked me up. Very interesting otherwise tho.
