This absolutely has the energy of older siblings convincing the younger one that the position they’ve been given in the game is actually really great.

I know people who took GCSE history and I can tell you that is a 100% historically accurate set you got there.

Loving the English accents. Even as an English person, the only way I could tell you weren’t just a really posh English person was the “th” in “thank you”. Cracking vid, boys

First off, funny skit.

Just so nobody leaves here thinking his is actually a valid criticism of 18th century armies though, imma rant a bit.

Flags and regimental standards play a really important battlefield role in command and control in any 18th century army. For starters, when you've got 600-1000 guys attempting to maintain a half decent battlefield formation (you don't want guys getting too far in front getting hit by friendlies, or guys too far back hitting friendlies) having a big fucking flag saying "form the line here" helps a lot.

Secondly, these battlefields often got smokey as all hell. Visibility often goes to shit after a few minutes because gun powder creates a ton of smoke, and there's a lot of dudes shooting. So for a general, the ability to figure out where his units actually are through all that shit is really important, and the ability to figure out which are which is also really helpful. These people don't have radios to report their position to command, so flags really are one of the best ways for a commander to have any idea what the fuck is going on when shit starts flying.

As to the idea that a standard bearer needs a gun, two things to consider. 1: there are 600-1000 other guys with guns in his regiment. His one more firearm ain't tipping the firepower balance.
2. He's surrounded by some of the baddest motherfuckers in the regiment. The NCOs responsible for guarding the regimental colors are usually a bunch of pipe hitting veterans who know their business very well. This guy has a better bodyguard setup than most of the officers in his regiment.

TLDR: flags are super useful, and the colors are incredibly well protected on the battlefield.

I feel this as a HR person trying to convince a manager to take on a nightmare team. "Fantastic experience, great opportunity to show your skills as a manager, we trust you for this" 😱😱

Only became conscious of this in the second viewing, but the background noise really makes a big impact. The birdsong and horse trotting add to the realism. All your attention to detail I’m sure takes so much time, but it takes your vids to the next level. Does not go unnoticed. Grand job!

Hog excels himself with the set. I love the dynamic between you. Your fancy new camera working its magic with the low light. There was a very “Mitchell and Webb” ‘Are we the baddies?’ vibe about it. Amazing you did this in your office. More mad scenarios, please.

I kinda get the impression they don't want him to live 🤔 but I can't put my finger on it.

Well the standard bearer was really important in terms of units and armies since they helped keep the men in a unit together and knowing where the rest of their allies are. It also allows the commander to know where all of his units are on the field and make decisions. The drummer at the end was also really important as their tempo helped keep the men moving at the same speed and moving in formation. Both of these posts were vital for the victory of armies from the ancient world all the way to the late 19th century.

As a history student this was somehow MORE funny with the inaccuracies... And that was *before* 'The battle of the Big George IV, 1639'
Great work again

It's absurd that we never learnt about the Battle of Big George the Fourth! Wouldn't it be a great honour!

There's a treaty saying that only Standard Bearers can attack Standard Bearers. It also governs the Duels of Drummers. I know. I checked.

Getting ready to start a period drama? I thought I was there in the battlefield, with all the realistic costumes and props. The hair. Especially the hair.

"For everyone who falls, ten shall take their place"
A wonderful sentiment, as long as you aren't the corpse they replace.

The syncronisation of Arms and Hog with the flag waving made me laugh so much 😅 also "a great honour" is now permanently part of my vocabulary
