// My Story

I am currently a software developer who once modeled and thought I wanted to pursue a career in the fashion industry. While I was modeling in Hong Kong, I eventually felt the desire to further my education. I decided to depart the modeling world and move back to Canada, knowing that could be the end of my modeling opportunities. I attended Ryerson University for GCM (Graphic Communications Management), as I thought I might still work in the fashion industry in another capacity. It was in my last year of university, I was introduced to a very basic coding course. I instantly fell in love. From there I knew I wanted to pursue software development but didn't have a clue where to start. I didn't want to go back to university as I just completed a four-year degree. I decided to enroll in a 10-week intensive coding Bootcamp. From there I started working at a small startup learning and growing my technical and soft skills. I then transitioned to a larger company where I am a software developer and technical consultant today.

Yess! Definitely needed this as a reference - some of my friends were discussing wanting to learn how to code, but they were unsure of where to start/what the time commitment would be. Thanks for making this! 😀

Great stuff! I've had my moments of dejection when faced with a problem, as have some of my colleagues, but hearing the experience of others really does wonders. Sharing this with my web dev cohort.

One way to learn coding faster is to use an Integrated Development Environment with code suggestion features and error indication on the spot while coding. For example, in Microsoft Visual Studio, these features are known as IntelliSense. For me, I learned the syntaxes of C# without taking a proper college subject on the language. IntelliSense really guided me, of course with some startup guidances from my mentor.

Thank you Tiff, that is really helpful information. When I started learning Python, I rushed through the course, only to go back a second time to focus on the fundamentals. So I can definitely relate to this.

I always follow your advice - focus on fundamentals. Ask for help is priceless, because you do not need even getting help, you need just properly formulate problem, and asking is only approach.

Great video Tiff - and excited to have you as a part of INTERACT (and on the podcast soon)!

Your video on "What engineering leaders do that devs hate" is going to be a hit!

UGGH! I'm working at my job, so I wont' be able to go to the Interact conference. I so can't wait to start my development career.

Anyways, I have some further advice here for asking for help, and when to ask for help[. What I do, before asking for help, is ask myself this one key question: "Is there anything I can do to move me forward from here?" So, this could include doing a search on google for a solution, or trying a list of ideas I have to test my theories of why the code didn't work. As I am doing this and trying these different ideas, I write them down (I use google docs). When I run out of ideas and get totally stuck then I have the things I have already tried written out so when I compose my email, stack overflow post etc, I just cut and paste what I did along with the clear description of what it is I am trying to accomplish.

Keep up the great work Tiff, I love your videos!!

Fundamentals are so important that progressing without them is difficult. I've wasted my first 3 years just jumping around between different random topics and programming languages without understanding the basics.

Do programming skills come with mind reading?😲
I swear that just today I was thinking myself 'How long does it take?' and 'Why can't I learn faster how to code?' and then this video popped up on Youtube's homepage when I was looking for something for a project I am working on.
Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts and insights about it, and thus being so relevant to my (and probably many more's concerns.)💚

I wanna ask:

Q1: what bootcamp you were a part of, and how do you find out about conferences?

Q2: how'd you secure (or how hard was it to) secure your first job out of the bootcamp without a degree in CS?

Q3: are you currently working the same job you got out of bootcamp, or is it a different one now?

Q4: what is your computer and filming setup? Looking to buy a second screen and mechanical keyboard

What was the name of the boot camp that u used ?

Breaking stuff is how I learn new things! I like to follow a tutorial online then change stuff to see what happens
