A god is a motivating spirit, the way that a chair is an object to sit on. Its only defined by what it does, and the fact that it does what it does qualifies it as a god. Rage for example can override your other motivations, and you end up "not being yourself" or saying "i dont know what came over me", because thats how its perceived by the individual, as posession. Marduk in my opinion represents a prototype of rationality, something like judgment, or discernment, because he regulates the activities of the gods for the preservation of the far off future. Its an oversimplification, but its something like an analogy, not meant as an explanation. As time passed, that ideal became more refined, and seems to have become Horus, Zeus, and ultimately Jesus; the logos.
