How to decide what type of camera to buy?

There are several types of cameras out there: dSLRs, hybrid cameras, point-and-shoot, advanced point-and-shoot, film cameras, full frame cameras, medium format cameras. How to decide which one is for you and which one to buy for your first (or next) camera? In this video I give you my recommendations as to what camera type you could buy. I’m not giving you a simple answer but I’ll rather discuss this topic so that you could make up your own mind. I use primarily Fujifilm and Nikon cameras, so I know more about these brands. My main recommendation for new users boils down to choosing between dSLR and hybrid cameras. The dSLR cameras are older technology but still very capable and you can get very affordable great quality lenses for them. Hybrids and the cameras of future and you cannot go wrong by choosing one of those.

I love your channel and videos, you are very thorough! I just bought a lightly used Fuji XT20 last week and have loved it so much so far, but your videos have helped me a lot, so thank you! Keep up the good work!

Morning, Tom. Without question my pocket Canon 310 Elph has taken the vast majority of my best pics. Now I have three Fuji bodies, five Fuji lenses and a little growing pile of very nice vintage manual glass. (It's a kick getting a shipment from Ukraine with no problems) But I can't drive now, and walking around in San Francisco with 1500 bucks hanging around my neck is a bit risky. Many limitations come with somewhat early pocket cameras. You can't choose your f stop even in program. You may tell it to shoot two stops under and choose cloudy for indoor to get some great warmth and saturation, but the camera will decide whether to change the speed or f stop. Still, over 13 or so years, going through 4 used copies, I could easily create a pdf photo album of 80 images to be proud of. (and only 4 of them nature) Now I have two mint copies of the Elph and keep them away from pocket lint, the biggest issue with an extending lens. Let's put it this way. You saw my short film noir. 30 percent of it was shot with the Elph, while the rest was with a Canon 5D Mark II. And nobody has ever noticed.

I'm still trying to decide between Nikon Z and Fujifilm X. The only thing that stops me to go full on Nikon it's the size and i can't afford having two systems with real commitment for both.

Hi Tom. Love your channel. Give me your opinion on buying a camera: Fuji XT30ii or Nikon ZFC? They both have the same looks i like. But sometimes i feel fuji is all about film simulations and pictures all look the same, with that filter look. Is that it? I need one to study as an enthusiast (do panning, long exposure, portraits etc).
