In this experiment, we will look at the reaction of hydrochloric acid and magnesium metal to form magnesium chloride salt and hydrogen gas.

Test for hydrogen gas: Place a lighted wooden splint at the mouth of the test tube

Observation: If hydrogen gas is present, the lighted splint extinguishes with a 'pop' sound.

Content suited for Lower Sec Science (Chemical Changes), and Upper Sec Chemistry (Acids and Bases / Salts).
