Even if transition regret rates were as high as transphobes say they are (which they aren't) banning gender affirming care or making it harder to access wouldn't be the proper response. People regret getting tattoos all the time, and we don't respond to that by making tattoos illegal or medically gatekeeping them. People are free to do whatever they want to their bodies, and that includes the freedom to make mistakes.

If any other medical procedure had a 99% success rate it would be touted as the gold standard of care and hailed as a medical miracle. Transphobia is so obvious in this case.

Knee replacement surgery has a higher regret rate and yet you don't see fear mongering about procedures like that.

I'm a detransitioner, and to me, it's VERY important that we keep helping trans people so they can live as their true selves :)
Transphobia is a scabbed sore on society, and hatred keeps picking it open.

I detransitioned because I realised that it wasn't for me after all, but that does not mean that trans people are faking it or "aren't real", it means it wasn't for me personally.

also important to note a lot of people who detransition do so temporarily, especially bc of that lack of social/financial support. once theyre in a better environment or have more funds they continue to transition

this isnt to discount people who start transitioning only to realize their gender is different than what they originally thought and seek to reverse some of their transition choices. they are valid, they deserve to make whatever changes to their body or presentation that make them comfortable, but their struggle does not erase trans people as a whole

Detransition rates are often reported by clinics when a patient doesn't return meaning anytime someone moves or stops hrt short term (often due to financial issues) they are counted as "medical detransition" by those clinics. Private clinics shouldn't be the ones reporting these things because they don't have the context to why a specific patient isn't going to the same clinic.

I actually wrote a paper on rate of detransition after gender affirming surgeries
Of 7928 people who underwent GA surgeries, only 77 expressed regret and among those 77, only 38 detransitioned. The ones who detransitioned did so because they
a) came out as nonbinary (3 cases)
b) were presurred by romantic partners to have surgeries (7 cases)
c) the social pressure after coming out was so severe that they felt it would be better and safer for them to detransition (26 cases)
Or D) they had genuine regret and wanted to return to their AGAB (2 cases)
2 cases of true detransition out of 7928, or roughly a detransition rate of 0.025%. For context, the average rate for other cosmetic surgeries can be as high as 57%

Also, I personally don't see detransitioning as an inherently anti-trans experience. Detransitioning doesn't negate your previous transition. Rather, it confirms the fact that gender is fluid and your perception of your own gender might change throughout your life.

I knew a trans girl who detransitioned to get into the army. She was made fun of a lot for not passing super well and at the time she told me “it’s just too hard to be myself when everyone doesn’t see me like that, ”. She ended up killing herself while deployed.

Also the regret rates of gender-affirming surgeries is dramatically lower than that of any cosmetic surgeries (as in less than 1% regret rate vs around 50% for cosmetic surgeries)

I socially explored my gender identity in 2012-2013 and used various names such as Lucas and tried out different pronouns. I ultimately found that I am a cis woman and my disphoria at that time came from having been raised in a cult. My current girlfriend is transgender is I have fought for legislation to help keep trans and trand assumed people safe. I just want everyone to be safe and happy. Detransitioning can have many reasons and thankfully it usually is not because of fundy Christian bullying abuse.

Bruh I remember I had a transphobe argue with me in college because she thought that the suicide rate among trans people was so high because TRANSITIONING ruined their lives and made them miserable and they realize they should have stayed as the gender they were born as, and my opinion was no, its because of the hate, dead naming, and people not accepting a trans person's identity that causes depression. Like imagine knowing that you're a woman your whole life and finally being able to present that way, but your parents still insist that you are actually a man. Like that would be depressing. But she wasn't tryna hear my POV

You should also keep in mind that in the 2000s there was a similar “ex gay” movement by people claiming that they were gay but then “found God” and suddenly had a factory reset back to straight.
