From experience, the ground can absolutely collapse under you. Decided to end things with my partner of 6 years because the new connection they formed came at a bad time when I was experiencing major life events. I didn't feel supported by my partner like I needed, and it became clear how little I meant in contrast to the new guy in his life. I tried to be supportive, but didn't feel that reciprocated. The fallout that followed was hell, ex partner blocked and ignored me for months while I was trying to resolve our vehicles and belongings then persued legal action for "harassment" never once taking any accountability. My situation was framed as polyamory but I was truly just dealing with abusive and narcissistic individuals with a lack of empathy. To this day, still feel like I lost my very best friend- and it just makes me realize how delusional I was to think this person that treats me so badly was ever my best friend. I stand by decision to end the relationship over him choosing polyamory. It was more selfish and egotistically driven rather than "I have so much love to give."
