One of the most important scientific instruments onboard the James Webb Space Telescope has run into an issue. Webb's Mid Infrared Instrument, also known as MIRI, is currently experiencing problems, and NASA has decided to stop observations using one of its modes until they find a solution.

The video explains the importance of MIRI, the latest issue with the instrument, and how it affects the overall infrared observatory.

By space telescope standards the JWST has had very few and rather minor issues. People seem to forget how many issues Hubble and Kepler had and they did absolutely incredible work regardless. In Hubble's case, it actually still does for its age. The JWST is actually exceeding expectations and it's lifespan was doubled by a near-perfect orbital insertion.

Also wtf is this comments section y'all need to lay off the conspiracy theory drugs lol

"Important instrument" is an understatement.

Woah watching that simulation of how the light lol/images enter the mirroring module and bounce of the dozens of mirrors and the color grading wheel is actually fascinating !

I look forward to every video you post about James Webb. I sure hope they find a way to fix this issue. It's all so exciting. What a great time to be alive!

Hope the problem gets resolved soon. Webb's observations are mind blowing

I hope this is a temporary glitch & a solution can be found. This proves that space is a hostile environment.
Thanks for the update.

Please this is the last thing that would have happened to our Webb out there
Lets all of us Curious personal, ( to know these Secrets of the universe) should pray that this instrument works normally again

The complexity of the instrument is incredible. It's absolutely epic that humans figured this out.

Thank you (secrets of the universe). Although this may be very bad news 😢 I still want to know about it. Please keep us informed of any changes 👍🏼

Sad to hear that but expectations....
It won't disappoint us.

That just sad... hopefully they come up with a fix or work around. 🙏

I feel like nasa will come up with a fix because the telescope was build for a harsh environment the telescope hopefully will get back to normal in no time thanks for the updates

However, due to a terrible miscalculation of scale, the entire alien battle fleet
was instantly destroyed by crashing into some giant, primitive space telescope

1:35 it is pronounced specTROS-copy lol that was weird bro

A benefit of Hubble that is far superior to what this telescope has going for it is that it was close enough that we could perform maintenance on it and even upgrade the hardware.

It was not the main wheel but a secondary gear that only affects a single mode. It is a negligible issue currently.

Just phenomenal!

But what drugs are the people in the comment section abusing? Seems some people can make a conspiracy theory from literally anything. "Strange, the fire fighters didn't head out today. Maybe they want to hide that they actually start fires and paint walls pink in the process!? Must be the case, since last saturday they went to an emergency and there was a cat in the tree. Now all of a sudden the tree misses a branch!" Ergo: cats don't exist. Peoples logic.

Isn't it possible that this a cosmic ray bit flip error? Earth's magnetosphere doesn't protect JWST, and despite the shielding, an energetic enough particle can still go through it & affect the instruments. In this case, it could be causing mission control to detect excess friction where there is none.
