The key to this moves success is analyzing your opponent.

They have to be cautious enough that they're going to respect an incoming threat, if they're not they will just stab you with no regard to their own safety and double you.

However, they also have to be inpatient enough that they don't want to wait around.

Throw a couple of feints beforehand, and see how they respond.

And remember, if your opponent starts to counter attack into your preparation for attack, it's always acceptable to retreat and regroup. Heck, you can even snipe their hand as you retreat!

I used to do something like this in Wrestling. We called it a “hesitation” shot, where when go for a take down (which we call taking shot), we just stop in the middle for a fraction of a second, they try to block, see you aren’t committing and then just step right into you when you finish it.
