2:30 Avoiding confusion when calculating protein requirements
4:32 Dietary fat on keto

In this video, we’re going to talk about protein requirements on a ketogenic diet. First remember to keep your carbs low—between 20 and 50 grams per day or less.

You want to make sure you have enough protein in your diet so that you don’t break down muscle protein for energy. On average, you should consume about 3 to 6 ounces of protein each meal.

Each day, you should consume a minimum of .36 to .7 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Too much protein can strain the liver and kidneys, leading to the development of kidney stones. It can also lead to excess body fat.

When you’re eating the proper amount of protein, you allow your body to tap into your fat reserve for energy.

As you adapt to keto and intermittent fasting, your protein and dietary fat requirements will decrease. Oftentimes, you won’t need more fat than what’s already found in your protein sources.

If you want to maintain your weight or even gain weight, feel free to add more fat to your diet.

This was the best explanation of protein intake on keto that I’ve seen yet! It’s been my biggest question since starting keto a month ago, thank you, Sir!

Thank you for clarifying the amount of calculated weight of protein is PER DAY (instead of per meal). I learned previously from you that too much protein spikes insulin, bouncing you out of a keto-state.

THANK YOU for the videos!!

I'm so confused when I check my protein intake in many different protein calculators each of them give different amounts of protein that I should take in a day. Love your info, Dr Berg! Straight to the point and easy to follow

Great info. I started a modified keto diet approximately 11 days ago, due to me feeling tired and previously testing as pre diabetic. According to my home testing kit my blood sugar has dropped down considerably but I am still in the pre diabetic range. After watching your videos for quite sometime, I did not completely understand the keto diet that you have been explaining and rejected it to some degree. Today is August 1, 2020, and after watching this video and another one in wee hours of the morning entitled, a 'light bulb' turned on in my head and now I understand a whole lot better as to what you're talking about regarding the keto diet. This video help me to realize that I was getting too much protein in my so called modified keto diet as I thought getting a lot of protein and avoiding carbs were the only factors.

I AM NOW ON BOARD AS OF TODAY.

I still have some learning to do, but surmise that I have the basics now. With your continued help and products, I will be able to learn a lot and reach my goals.

I hope you get this message.

Thank you.

This makes so much more sense. In previous videos, you recommended 3 to 6 oz (84 to 168 g) per meal. For me, this was too much to achieve. Now calculating protein need according to one's own body weight is a relief!

Dr Berg thanks for the excellent video. When on keto and IF there are 3 scenarios please clarify for a 180 lb person
1) person trying to preserve and maintain the muscle mass take 65 grams protein
2) Trying to gain muscle mass with resistance exercise go for around 120 grams of protein.
3) While on keto HGH should help maintain or preserves muscle wastage so do we need 65 grams protein to maintain the muscle or eat less protein (it is supposedly increasing the insulin) this is where it is very confusing.
