In this short video, I want to cover the signs that you're consuming too much protein.

Signs you're consuming too much protein:
1. Gastrointestinal malaise
This is a general discomfort or uneasiness in your digestive system. Something just doesn't feel right.

2. Dysphoria
This is a state of generalized unhappiness, restlessness, dissatisfaction, or frustration.

3. Lethargy
This is a lack of energy and enthusiasm.

4. Weakness

On the keto diet, you should keep your protein calories at rough about 20%.

Skeletal muscle protein synthesis (the creation of new muscle or repair of muscle) occurs when you consume about 20-25g of protein per meal. But, once you go over this, you're going to have less protein synthesis and more oxidation.

As far as your keto plan, consuming too much protein will reduce your keto adaptation, increase your blood sugars, increase your insulin, and drop your ketone production. You only need a moderate amount of protein on the keto diet.

Okay, I see I created some confusion by not differentiating something. When I say, 20-25 grams of protein per meal, I am talking about the actual protein in meat or other sources. I am not talking about the weight of your protein in meat or egg or fish. EXAMPLE: 3 ounces of beef weighs 85 grams, but it only has 22 grams of actual protein. The rest is water and other things. The other point I want to bring up is depending on your age, metabolism, physical activity - this protein threshold can go higher so experiment and determine the right about for you. Also, these symptoms can also occur if you are not eating enough protein.

Thank you! You just gave me the answer to my body discomfort. Remember people, everyone's body is different It all depends on how healthy or unhealthy your gut/ digesting system is.

I feel that different ways of eating work for different people. There are some that do better on vegan, others on carnivore, others paleo, keto, intermittent fasting, multiple meals a day, etc. I believe you have to find what works for you, your exercise/activity amount, lifestyle, etc.

I thought the disruption to sleep would be a part of this. I tried out carnivore for a couple of weeks, but the meat I was eating was too lean. I didn't feel any of the symptoms mentioned, but one thing that I definitely felt was a great disruption in my sleep pattern. I already cut out alcohol and coffee beforehand, as I do have a lot of sleep issues, but still couldn't get to sleep properly. Then I learned that protein stimulates hormones that keep you awake. I lowered my protein, upped my fats, and ate vegetables again, and I was able to sleep properly after a few days.

I keep it simple by keeping in line with Dr. Berg's 3-6 oz of protein recommendation per meal. I eat 2 meals a day. On my rest days, I eat 3 oz per meal, on more active days, may eat 4 or 5 oz. I start with the veggies first! Makes it hard to overeat protein and fat.

I eat about 90 % high protein; mostly red meat, eggs, raw milk, cheese. The rest is mostly fruit and minimal vegetables. I feel fantastic.

I'm pretty sure the body can utilise more than 20-25g of protein per meal. If it couldn't, people who do OMAD (one meal a day) wouldn't get enough protein. Also, carnivores wouldn't do that well.

I had many of these things and it was Vitamin D! AND also moderate protein from previous videos improved my kidney function! Thank you Dr. Berg for changing my life (and possibly saving it!)

Carnivore Diet is the only way for me. I'm 3 1/2 years in, and have improved my health, lost weight and have increased energy and libido! I appreciate Dr. Berg's advice, but you have to listen to your own body to know what's right for you. Steak and eggs baby!
