The brain can start incurring damage as quickly at the 3 minute mark. It depends on the individual and you wouldn't know until the damage has already happened.

Kevin sounds like someone who's experienced failure so many times he doesn't want anyone else to go through it. I think you gotta teach him it's okay to make mistakes because they make us stronger. He just wants to protect you :(

My cousin was military trained and died in his parents pool, having a breath holding contest. Leaving behind his wife and baby.
Be careful under the water.

everyone remember, just because you can doesn't mean you should. Be careful, even if it doesn't have visible effects lack of oxygen to the brain can do damage (& the time you have before it becomes a probem varies from person to person & I would not be surprised if this was only tested on men & it's different for women knowing everything that was exclusively tested on (fit young) men or even if they had women like one or two just to say they did before being declared as universal I would not put it past the research on this)

Coming from an ex lifeguard: even if you know you are good at something, an athlete, etc., you can still drown. Always be careful, in her situation she has people watching her and watching for warning signs. When you're in a pool having a competition you don't have that. I can't tell you how often it was that kids would start drowning doing this stuff, etc.

Getting a reliable spotter is key with any breath holding in water. There's risks to breath holding in air but if you pass out you'll probably be fine. In water, not so much.

The brain develops brain damage after 4-5 minutes, so trying to hold it for that lonbis definitely a horrible idea...

I was a competitive synchronized swimmer for 5 years (for those who don’t know synchronized swimming mostly consists of being underwater doing moves and stuff so we need to hold our breaths for long periods of time while focusing on doing complicated movements) and in training/warm ups we would swim 25 metres in one breath and called it under waters or unders in short, at first it was so hard to even do it in the first place and when you first completed your under you felt really light headed (my friend even said she felt like passing out the first time she did her unders) and needed a good 1-3 minutes to recover but with training and doing it so often it became so easy and only took maybe a few seconds to recover and keep going with warm ups(1ish years maybe). For me I wouldn’t think about how long I needed to swim or how much more I just swam, a trick was to stay close to the bottom or on the bottom of the pool and how I thought about doing it was one stroke at a time and my mind would kinda be off in another place like you with singing a song or I was thinking about stuff going on in my life, looking back at it I do feel like for atleast the first little bit of an under it truly didn’t feel like I was underwater it was calming. Panicking isn’t going to do anything for you when holding your breath underwater you know your limits and you know if you can go just a little more to push yourself to do better.

Also years after quitting Syncro I tried timing how long I could hold my breath and it was around 1:40 not sure exactly how long but around that
