why i use old laptops ! (as a university student)

im a linguistics student with random passions and one of those passions just so happens to be old computers. i was given this old thinkpad last term and i have been using it ever since for various studies and i have found it to be the most effective for what i want to get done. we live in a society that's very digitally cluttered, so having something that can do the bare essentials is something really refreshing because it allows you to get away from all the distractions and just work on what is necessary. i treat this like my kindle but for school work honestly.

i hope you guys enjoyed. thanks for watching !

also thanks for the recent support on my videos. you guys are awesome :)

ThinkPad X220 is about perfect for me. I don't want to get anything newer and it still has all the performance I want

I had a revelation because of you. 4:3 aspect ratio is more focused. It makes you focus. And because of less space, you are more focused on the stuff that is there. My brain was *blown*. I have ADHD, so I have issues focusing, and switching my secondary monitor for a 4:3 lower resolution monitor made me more focused. Maybe I should have *both* monitors I use 4:3. I also just mostly write stuff on it, and a lot of things, I noticed, don't even *use* the width of a 16:9 aspect ratio.

I’m so happy I found your channel, I’m also getting into retro laptops. I just purchased the x61 with the exact same specs. Can’t wait to get it in tommorow :)

I actually enjoyed using a core 2 duo laptop for school. It was annoying to multitask and it only had 2gb of ram. However I found it smooth and enjoyable to use. It was an hp dv6000 that my grandma gave me for free.

This is why I prefer using an old iBook or Powermac G4 12 inch to do writing on. It totally makes you more focused, and those old keyboards... they really are amazing to type on. I have a Fujitsu Lifebook as well. I needs fixed though.

Me on my T480.
Such a perfect laptop honestly. I don't want to get rid of it.
I bought a 72 Watt hour battery and I use it interchangeably with the shtty 24wah that it comes with, and even for an 8th gen CPU. It's pretty dang good when it comes to battery life.

I love Core-2 era laptops. I have a Toughbook CF-30 that could be my daily driver if I really wanted to carry it around. It pulls up modern websites like Youtube a little slowly, but its totally usable. It ran FreeBSD for a while but its on Debain 12 now. FreeBSD performance was snappier, I have to say. If I ever got an old Thinkpad I'd definitely join BSD Thinkpad gang

I use a x61s for Uni studying CS and I love the keyboard man and how tiny the laptop itself is, but browsing and opening shit is sadly so slow. I am also thinking about just upgrading the interior.
I do have another laptop with good specs I use if my x61s is not enough tho

I've had the T61p with the factory defect GPU quadro FX 570m, which eventually was swapped for an intel iGPU board. It was amazing for games like Starcraft 2, Oblivion, Fallout NewVegas, Source based games. Windows 7 used to fly on that one, I've had it since release candidate beta days.
The keyboard is like none other, I'm typing on a macbook 2019 with disgust how bad keyboards can get relative to old thinkpads...
The old hardware bodes well for a minimalist linux distro like xubuntu, learning programming and linux was great on it.

Huge problem on Thinkpads like X61 is the TN panel, so if you are sensitive to bad screens, you should avoid them. Yes it can be upgraded, but that's expensive. And the overheating Wifi card can be annoying. Still, cool machines, in terms of aesthetics and utility. X220 and X230 are the way to go in 2023. I use X230 i7-3612qe as main and only machine.

Literally after watching this video went to the facebook marketplace and gonna pick up some old 4:3 laptops haha. Love old technology and glad to see others enjoy the 4:3 monitors, I got a pair of 5:4 which is close enough. Great video either way, look forward to what else in store!

got a rare hp pavilion tx2000 for free in a lot of 4 broken laptops and i managed to diagnose the laptop and figure out the issue. i have ordered a new KEYBOARD for the thing and i plan on using it as a retro gaming machine. i also managed to fix a 15 inch compaq laptop by reflashing the bios. also bro you're so underrated

I have a ThinkPad T450 and I like the keyboard on it too, but same problem with your X61 that it has a pretty poor TN screen.

On the topic of the X61 and older 4:3 laptops, honestly I find the aspect ratio nicer for writing documents as using Microsoft Word or Google Docs or any word processor on a widescreen display is a just a massive waste of screen space. I've gotten used to snapping Word on just the left or right side of my T450's screen and I found I'm able to focus better on documents that way.

As far as multitasking, my T450 has an i5 5300U and I find its still pretty underpowered for doing graphics and basic game programing on Unity and similar tasks even with 16gb of RAM.

I would love to get an X series ThinkPad (since my T450 is around 3kg and I always bring it with my to uni) but the soldered on RAM is a bit of a problem as I would like to upgrade that.
Would also love to get an older ThinkPad to just play around with or turn into a dedicated server or something haha.

Yeah, I'm agree with you. I'm using old Acer Aspire 5250 for study. He has next specs:

AMD E-300 1.3 ghz
4 GB DDR3
Radron HD6310

Fully enough to read some articles, take school notes and even watch some videos on 360p quality on YouTube. I'm using Arch Linux on it
