Anyone very familiar with history will realize quickly that Dune was inspired by The Mahdi (Al Mahdi) of the Sudan. Mahdi simply means Messiah. Paul is the Messiah, the promised one, the redeemer.

In our world, the battles in the great desert between Gordon of Britain and The Mahdi's fanatical Dervish believers in the 1880's is legendary. The Mahdi's armies were the first to break the British Square in battle. His forces annihilated an entire British army.

The Messianic theme. The word Mahdi. The fanatical desert fighters. The "spice". It's all there, plain enough. Paul has to be called the Mahdi, the one expected, the great hero. In the world of Dune the word becomes Maud'Dib.

There being so much inspiration taken from the middle east Paul himself takes on the role of both Muhammed and Mahdi.

And the Guild Navigators saw Paul's coming like a storm on the horizon... but likewise they too were caught in the trap, desperate to sound the alarm but also needing to keep the secret of the Spice and that their secret control of the planet was slipping. They started panic-buying Spice to build up some sort of reserve, then inviting the armadas of the galactic powers into Arrakis orbit, lowered the price of transport to almost zero, but then forbidding any kind of orbital bombardment, forcing the Emperor to land and be caught in the trap too.
