Microsoft Surface Duo 2 Review

The Surface Duo 2 has been upgraded in just about every way compared to the original. But is that enough to make Microsoft's $1,500 phone worth recommending?

Outside of Software/app issues. Seems like some reviewers stubbornly want it to be exactly like the fold when it was never meant to be that

I own both the Z Fold 3 and the OG Surface Duo. Each device has its unique use case. The Z Fold 3 is a media power house that offers split screen multitasking. The Duo is a multitasking beast perfect for mobile professionals that require a workflow that calls for constantly needing access to multiple applications. I constantly keep outlook running on my left screen for work related emails. And so everything else on the right screen. On the Z Fold 3 this is not easily accomplished or very satisfying. Once I click to open another app, it’s going to completely take over the entire screen and then I must split screen the new app with one running in the background. Then both apps running have a severe narrow aspect to them. On the duo I get both apps in full aspect ration.

I think people use it incorrectly. Tablet mode works great when screens are in landscape. And the dual screens are more for running two apps opposed to spanning.

i don't just get. If an app doesn't seem to be optimized with the duo, then rotate it such that the crease is horizontal.

I don't really get this kind of reviews. It s a dual screen setup, it may be nice if a particular app adapts to be expand acrross the screens but is not the main goal, if you are looking to use your apps like that it goes against the most useful feature for this device, which is be able to multitask, if you use one app open across both screen, just one app you'll be better suit with a big screen phone/tablet or whatever. But multitasking just like a dual setup at your office/home, like pluging a second monitor to your laptop is such a nice thing to have if you workflow needs that, but also I think is this sort of thing you didn't know how much you need it until you get used to.

I watched this on my OG Surface Duo while tweeting on the second screen. Good review

The Duo 2 at $1500 should come with earbuds and a smart watch. That in itself would make the device extremely useable, even when closed.

I don't see why you'd really want to span G Maps across two screens though. My hope is to have Maps on the left screen, then like Spotify or Firefox open on the other screen.

There are so many people hating on the Duo because it's specifically a niche device. In my opinion more people should look at it like that. Most of the main gripes have been addressed in one way or another, and now some folk nag about a camera bump. Can't please everybody unfortunately. I'm not saying it's perfect or anything but personally I can appreciate the innovation.

The surface duo is a productivity machine that takes multitasking to the next level. Only a person who value this feature will get it. Issues are mostly software related and am sure upcoming updates will fix them all. Am tempted to get it. It's different

I just received mine in the mail earlier today...So far it is the best phone I have ever used...My first dual screen phone and so far I love it...I don't see any of the "buggieness" that these folks are reporting...This phone isn't meant to be a tablet but to use as a dual screen device...It is way too early to give a review but so far this phone is snappy and the screen is beautiful...

I have the Duo 1 and I love it, it is future tech. All they need to do is fine tune the software and it will rock. No question, the most productive phone I have ever had, ever. And this is from a long time Sammy Note user. Getting the D2 today because I know what the experience is productive and feeds you the content.

Apps that span and make use of both screens are nice, but they're not the main reason to use a Duo. Having 2 apps open side by side, with the ability to drag and do between them, is a productivity game changer.

Seems most folks miss the point of DUO(2 screens, not a tablet - spanning 1 app across both screens is not the intention though it IS supported for some productivity apps like various email services) - including most of the reviews today;

It is a productivity device. I get that it is not for most people but review it based on its intended purpose.

Multitasking is fantastic on the LG V60 dual screen and should be just as good on the Surface Duo. The Surface Duo was never meant to replace a tablet. It's great for doing multiple things at once. Stuff like banking on one screen and a calculator on the other. Instagram on one, YouTube on the other. Calendar and messaging. Music and Nike Run Club app, etc.

You can't use the Surface Duo as a tablet because it's not a tablet. Is this really to hard to figure out?

This is the perfect replacement for my dead v50.
Dual screens are far better than a folding screen
