I am berber and from my experience we are a diverse group of people as far as physical characteristics go, one can't say that we are of black or white origin. We are not of Arab decent either as we were originally pagan and had our own written language before they arrived in the part of Africa. I like to imagine that barbers were always diverse in characteristics and an example of a culture that was united despite that. It is nice to see people discussing berbers as I feel like there is a lot of history to my people that is worth investigation, North African history in many ways parallels a lot of what has happened in American history and I feel that people could learn from that so thanks for posting this.

The Berbers don't live in "scattered communities", Berber LANGUAGE SPEAKERS live in scattered communities, and we are not black nor are we white, and no, Arabs did not magically change the genepool of a quarter of a continent, and no, we are not nomads, some certainly were and some are still are (Tuaregs), but by no means are Berbers as a group are majority nomads, we are mostly settled communities, and we don't all live in the desert, and not all of north Africa is a desert. Now, what put the blacks into the equation for the first time, when "we" invaded what is now Mauritania and incorporated them into "our" empire, that's how they got to Spain, since they were more loyal to the Caliph than Berbers who had allegiance to their tribes, they were recruited as a slave (not like American slavery) unit called the Black Guard. Basically, what I am saying is, the pictures of those people you showed that are Berber are probably Tuaregs, the Tuaregs lived close to Black Africa for a long time, so, it's understandable that they would have black members amongst them, it's also worth noting that they still have members who are comparably similar feature-wise to northern Berbers who are not black, so, explain that. And also, we are lighter than Arabs. So, you are saying Black + Arab = A lighter tanned north African?

We barely know anything about history but what we do know is that Morocco has long been a place for multietnic diversity, because of several reasons. I am from Amsterdam where there are lots of Imazighen and people from rural regions and none of them are sub saharan black. None of them are West European white. Most of them are brown-olive, some are darker some are paler.

Not to be inpolite, but My father belongs to the North African tribes, and sorry to say this, we are rather white, compared to the south, and amazigh really means "The free white men of north Africa" and they have been called this since the days of the ancient Egyptians (which I write about) and I have lived in Egypt, and visit my family in Morocco through my life, and they are more white with a dark tan. Off course there are black people too, but it is more over in the whiter color than the black color. I am even more white than a regular danish person... Berber have blue eyes and brown hair and they look exactly like the old Greek Roman statues which Italians don't look like anymore due to the Moor invasions, they are the remnants of the Roman empire, the cave of Hercules where he lifted the sky for the God Atlas is found in Morocco the former most southern west edge of the Roman Empire.
