He didn't cut the tail so it shattered, but he had the start of a huge Prince Rupert Drop. Hence why it was so much water. If you break the tail of one of these, internal tension causes it to explode with remarkable violence. You can hear it pop, the water stopped the tiny shards from going far.

I do not that of some reason it stay afloat until it cooled down sufficiently before it suddenly sinks.

If you look closely, the glass is forming tight spiral formations and is cooling. The one he dropped shattered but the other ones are like Jack n The Box cajun fries ha. You dont normally see Ruperts drops with curly tails like that.

Interesting how it just floats there until the centre cools down and then it sinks. It just hovers there.
