How to setup iSCSI from a Synology to VMware vSphere ESXi - 319

If you have a server, you might want to add more storage to it, then it has. And you might want to or more servers to see the same storage. And for this ISCSI is a very good and easy way to go.

I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

I actually did the same exact thing after you posted your first video on Xpenology. I deployed Xpenology in a virtual machine on my ESXi 6 host and then connected another ESXi 6 server to it using iSCSI. Glad to see that you posted a followup video on using iSCSI with Xpenology!

Brilliant! I knew it was possible, but never found the need. Now that VMware comes into play, this brings up many options.
Thanx!

Love these videos, I'm running my own small fleet of HP DL320e nodes on 6.0. Wen't for NFS over iSCSI myself as I felt it was easier to copy/backup disk images on the NAS side if it could see what was inside the datastore.

I'd be really interested to see you do a video on FreeNAS and see what your thoughts are on it. Then maybe you could do a comparison of FreeNAS and Xponology in both iSCSI and NFS performance.

Hello ! Very very nice videos ... Thank you. I just found the little music in background a little too loud.

EXCELLENT VIDEO !!! We used your video to create 2 separate environments/offices with their own ESXi Hosts to a Synology iSCSI LUN. Your video walked us through every time. Thank you!!

We do have 1 question. Do you need to create a Volume first? Do you need to create a Disk Group?? Or can you just skip that all and go right to creating a LUN and connecting it to the ESXi Host and start adding virtual servers and virtual desktops. That's what we did both times. So far, over 2 years no problems, but do we need to create a Volume and a Disk Group?

Thank you!

LoL, seems recently anything I'm curious about and/or want to try I end up on one of your videos :)
I'm currently toying with the idea of running ESXi and visualizing my current server to it, that would then free up that server machine for a bare metal NAS. I currently have ESXi 6.5 in a VMWare machine as well as XPEnology running in anotehr VM, but can't get them to talk, neitehr NFS or iSCSI worked as datastore.

awsome. love the video, this is helpful in setting up my esxi data center. can you show us how you made vsphere show all the host servers in one sesion. . my vsphere only shows 1 esxi host at a time. . thank you.

I had a couple of questions regarding this because I'm going to be doing something similar.

1. You can only have 1 device connected to an iSCSI connection because if you have more than 1 data will be corrupted. So I don't understand why you connect the Synology to multiple servers. In any case is this okay to do and how would you set it up to automatically fail over to the second host once the first host fails?

2. How do you figure out how big to make each lun or datastore? Is it okay just to make 1 massive data store and put all your VM's just on that one data store? What would be best practice?

3. Does your NAS run on SAS drives or just normal SATA drives and if it is running on SATA drives how is the performance since SATA drives are slower than SAS drives?

Are you able to put VMware esxi guests on your 12 disk SAN boxes?

I tried a similar setup as you but I was not happy with the latency and performance and I was using gigibit network cards.

how stable you think synology ISCSI as storage. I am planning to setup for my client esxi cluster with sonology iscsi storage.

nice video, can you make a video about 2 synology's on different locations, syncing a hard drive over the internet. to have a copy of your data in case your house burns down. Also note, i will only buy 2 synology nas, so i can't make a VLAN over a router. I also subscribed to your channel :)
