My girlfriend’s marriage eventually ended in divorce and she had to pay him alimony and he got half of a 401(k) because she made more than him. Goes both ways.

I learned all this while working as a legal secretary, and mostly in family law. Most people don't get such a perspective. As they say, marry in haste, repent at leisure. People really should consult an attorney, specifically an attorney who specializes in family law, before tying the knot. And consider getting a prenup.
