Disappearing EV Miles - no wonder you have range anxiety!

What is the actual range of a Battery EV? Why is the car's range estimate higher than the rated range? Why does my EV not go as far as it promises?

Note: Electric cars are not for everyone.
flo charging note: In this video, I use a new flo Ultra charger. I charged from 18% to 80% (49.6 kWh) in under 20 minutes for less than C$10. More please.

Hi Maarten, no matter what the subject, good journalism just stands out. From mm to km, from charge stops to f stops, you are a straight arrow, mon ami. Many thanks. Oh! And two thumbs up for the Warren Zevon outro...

As I don't have a horse in that race yet, I appreciate hearing the views of an owner. One of these days I'll be looking at them, the new Scout line from VW comes to mind as a first choice. Being skeptical of the whole thing, there's going to be a few years of observations before I make up my mind. Thanks for the info!!

Maarten, you could make a video on how slowly paint dries and I would watch and enjoy it. You always have interesting perspectives, and I love your writing and delivery. You are so much more than camera reviews. Please keep making videos on all the things that interest you! --David

Always great to see a video from your channel. Cameras or other things, you do a great job explaining everything.

Thank you for doing the math. This will surely help me with my decision making process.

At first glance, I thought this would be about exposure values! 😂 Nonetheless, this is yet another fantastic video. Always a pleasure to see you share new content, Maarten!

Interesting choice to not mention the make/model or even allude to it with a camera angle showing the badge. I liked keeping it manufacturer agnostic, I don't think I've ever seen that done in automotive work. Nicely done Maarten

I thought I only had lens anxiety 🤣. This was a delight.

After all of the camera videos, this one was a surprise... a welcome one.
EVs are still quite expensive here in Australia and the choice is still very limited.
I drive a hybrid Toyota (Crown), which I feel bridges the gap quite nicely.
I hope the future brings the cost of EVs down.
It's also great to witness advancements in battery technology as EV conversions for vintage cars also appeals to me greatly. Exciting times.

I have a Tesla Model 3 LR sine 2020 and have used it extensively on long trips. The charging is not an issue. Its all suggested by the navigation. The longest I drove in one day is 1420km.

We have a KIA Niro EV 2020 - big battery 204PS model. WLTP combined is 455km, in summer we get 472km, winter is more like 380-390km. Range also heavily depends on your foot. If you push its eye out of course it will get less range. We usually charge it to 100% on AC and 80% on DC. After 57000km no change in range, 0 issues with the car, still on OG tires from factory. We never really had range anxiety and it is the best car we have ever owned.

Great to see your post Maarten, we have been using EV's for a few years now and these days, {we were lucky to retire early so no work mileage } Our millage is on the low side so range is seldom an issue . We recently did the NC500 here in Scotland { we had done it a few years ago using an ICE car } with getting there and some detouring over to Skye etc we did around 1000 miles . Every place we stayed at during the trip had chargers on site so we never had an issue. Bump the heating up to max if you really want to see the miles disappear 😀 Normally we can charge the car once every two weeks or even more . Our short trips i{ shopping etc } town driving is well suited to EV. Of course Scotland is tiny and Canada is huge especially in Km which we were taught in school but it has not quite stuck

A few years back when both of our kids were at different universities and had various work placements until they learned to drive and got their own cars we were really raking up the miles and I am not so sure EV's would have been up to the job. The silence and calm ride makes the EV's a joy to drive and I would never buy an ICE vehicle again

Looking forward to buying an EV. Just waiting for the US to build in more EV infrastructure. Plug-in hybrids might be the way to go for a while.

Thanks Maarten!

Maarten, I own a Tesla and I travel to Montréal, Canada twice a year from Ohio for a distance of about 1600 miles each time. I usually leave with a 95% charge and need to charge 3 times for a total of 100 minutes charging time. The car takes care of the logistics of finding chargers. In other words there's no range anxiety. I don't know in which province you're located but I can tell you that in Québec there are fast DC chargers in most towns. In my wife's hometown of 50k inhabitants there are many 100kw chargers. I recently visited my cousin near Mont Tremblant, in a small town of 6k people and they have several fast DC chargers and some free L2 chargers. Some people maybe put off by hearing that 100 minutes are used for charging but I'd say that at least 3 quarter of those minutes are used for meals and bathroom breaks. Also people should be reminded of the amount of time they spend refueling their vehicles all year long and it's a lot more that 100 minutes. I like to ask people, would you trade 3 hours of your time once a year, time you can use watching a movie, YouTube, and not having to ever go to a gas station and still have fuel in the tank? I think the answer is pretty obvious.

Thanks for this well thought out video. 13+ years detached from driving all together (since moving to Japan). I often wonder how I would cope with moving back to the states and the ludicrous gas prices. I like to drive too much and make too little when in the states, so this would be the answer. I am 100% okay taking an hour to charge while stretching my legs, and taking some photos if the mood strikes.

Hi Maarten. Great video. The only thing you might want to consider factoring in next time is the cost of maintaining or replacing the battery. Yes, that full tank of gasoline is expensive per km. But so is replacing the battery of EV, at which rate? Cheers.

Ok, now while Evy is busy charging tell me what speakers those are behind you. My photo habit is 1st but vintage audio is a close second. As always, thanks for fantastic video!

Hello Maarten, I remember you from the Fujifilm camera reviews.
It is nice to see you doing videos about electric cars.
I am thinking of getting an EV with LFP batteries and they can be charged to 100%.
By the way, energy stored in the batteries is in kWh and is the power (kW) multiplied by the time in hours. The SI unit for energy is Joules.
