In this YouTube short, you'll see the highlights of starting an IV in the dorsum of the hand. Before starting an IV or performing any nursing procedure, you'll want to follow all of the necessary steps such as performing hand hygiene, gathering supplies, verifying patient, protocols, and so forth.

I've been a RN for 33 years, worked in various ERs and that was a perfect technique.

Tip: hydrate really well before IV. Easier to get the vein

I have tiny veins; they've been compared to preemie veins. We've used the little packs that heat up the babies, even a diaper filled with warm water, to draw blood to the surface when my veins don't want to cooperate. They usually have to use the back of my hand. I've watched many blood draws & IV insertions on myself, nice to see it from another perspective.

So thankful for this type of learning as I am a hard stick patient and it’s always 2 to 3 rounds before they can really get my good veins to work. So now, I have an understanding about my veins

My eyes widened at ‘we’re going to clean it for about thirty seconds, ’ when i get my blood drawn or iv inserted they give a quick wipe and poke immediately. 😳

I am absolutely terrified of needles I got a blood draw last week, and it wasn't even that bad, I do have small thin veins which sucks as they have to dig around for my veins, but the nurses got an IV in me in the end!

Last time I had to get an IV, I had to be fasting for 10 hours, because I was getting my gut motility tested, but I accidentally fasted for 15 hours, because I fell asleep during the day and woke up too late to eat before the 10 hour mark. I was so dehydrated that they barely got the IV in, lol.

Recently finished my first nursing placement and got to give my first real needle, draw it up and everything! But I’ll be honest doing IVs seems so terrifying there are so many steps I’m worried I will screw it up I’ve heard so many stories of nurses continuously missing the vein. What if that’s me?

I suck at IVs - Last 5 times I tried I get flashback, but have too much trouble pushing the cannula in. Maybe i need to push the IV a bit in before trying to push cannula in?
