It has to do with the code requirement and the specs. Most of the time you use TIG root is because it’s clean and doesn’t leave stuff on the inside of the pipe that could jam up pumps or turbines.

That was really interesting. Not in the "Oil & gas industry" so always neat to learn something random like this. ✌

That's interesting when I stopped doing pipeline work around 2001 we used stick for everything everywhere.

A lot of food processing plants to, tig only unless it's away from direct contact surfaces and it's dirty or oily and hard to clean then we might mig or stick for speed.

maybe because a tig root doesn't leave slag inside the pipe and won't require a pig to be used to clean the root. just saying

I like how he explained when stick was better

It can also deal with the thickness of metal depending on your equipment.

I work in a tire plant. We try to use tig wherever we can because of the lack of sparks and slag.

This guy seems cool, like if you worked with him you would just be gobbling up as much of the information (not just welding either I bet) as you possibly could.

Weld procedure for abnormal alloys too. Can’t stick 310 stainless which is what I’m in right now. High chrome and high nickel content.

I got 2 weeks of welding in at tool school. Learned enough to ensure they hire a ticketed welder next time

Lots of places also consider putting in a tig bead on any process line that runs through a turbine, power plants especially don’t like 6010 👍

My dad helped build most of the refineries, and they are still running today

- And *TIG* is quiet & gives you a smooth Arc. But it's a lot slower welding.

It's the welding procedure from the plant that dictates the weld.... Boilermakers local 13 here

👍 Yes sir, GTAW is also a higher quality and more versatile weld.
