It may be a fire related issue too, in a lot of nuclear plants and distilleries they won’t allow you to do much stick, because of sparks while welding.

Tig is also a lot cooler . I usually just wear cotton gloves or barehand sometimes . I mean I know the weld is extremely hot but I feel like it’s more isolated . Tig also has a lot more control temp, speed, size, metal type wise.

Productivity is the main factor in the welding process used on a particular job. On large jobs I have seen a increase in using GMAW because of productivity and minimal heat input.
Miller has developed a GMAW process for SS pipe that excludes the need of back purge which saves money on argon and time and lowers heat input which deteriorates the alloys in SS. Miller calls it RMD.
I personally hate mig because mig runs you. It’s not fun.
Fab shops are predominantly mig. But I do see the trend moving to some type of GMAW for productivity gain.
Also some time in your career you’re going to run into semi automatic welding. Of course budget for tools and equipment drives everything.

There's a major pipe shop 1 County over from me, they run both tig and stick. They run the roots with tig but the rest is stick.

You can weld almost anything with tig. Having clean welds is a small part of it. Tig welds are way more precise than a stick weld. Also not to mention you can weld some very very thin material with tig that you cannot do with stick. Many companies when it comes to pipe welding want a tig root even out in the feild. The reason being is because tig is so precise it makes way cleaner roots and up to spec welds that are less likely to break. Many pipelines now want a tig root and 7018 or 8010 cover pass these days. I worked as a sheet metal tig welder for about a month. I was welding aluminum stair cases all day but the company was very young and I was very inexperienced and they couldn't afford to train me. Also the building they leased was falling apart so they ended up laying me off. I was very rushed as well. I was struggling welding aluminum sheet metal especially fast. They wanted each stair case done in less than ten minutes. I took me about 20 minutes at best. There is some jobs in tig welding that rush you. I am not making the mistake of getting hired by a small shop again especially if they can't afford to train me. I have a associates degree in welding but that is nothing in the welding industry because I am still considered a green horn even with a month experience.

Why not meet in the middle with mig? Reasonably clean. Good penetration(if done right) and it’s fast.

Production with clean tig, but resistance is going to take your jobs . Thin wall that is..heavywall you have a job for the rest of your life and probably be stick.😮

Thats why i like hard wire/fluxcore. Best of both worlds.

Isn’t stick like a wide paint brush versus tig is like a very small detail brush. Both can paint a house but they have different applications

Tig Weld it’s OK if you weld it inside on new clean metal but the process of stick rod will probably never be taken away for there’s gonna be always a lot of junk rusty pipe or metal that you’re gonna have a weld stick rod is the best source

Tig is weaker weld. Stick is strong weld.
