Determinism is an updated version of the religious concept of Fate, with the will of the gods replaced by physics. We do not live in a deterministic universe. We live in a universe that features reliable causation, the difference being that determinism posits that there is only one way for the universe to unfold given initial conditions. Reliable causation recognized that active agents can move through the world with knowledge and intention, ie. free will.
