Avatar: The Last Airbender just passed its 19th anniversary and we also just got a Netflix live-action adaption so its a great time to be an ATLA fan! I wrote this song for Azula because I love ATLA and given the complexity of her character I really wanted to write a song that captured her inner thoughts and feelings. I’m so glad that she’s been given a larger role and has gotten more screen time in the live-action adaptation of season 1 since she only started becoming relevant in season 2 of the original animated series! Getting more insight into her relationships with her father Fire Lord Ozai and her friends Mai and Ty Lee was definitely needed!

I liked the development she had in her Spirit Temple comic but I’m also happy that she didn’t get redeemed by some spiritual awakening in a comic book. Azula’s redemption arc will be a challenging one that will take her way longer than her brother’s did and Zuko’s arc lasted about 3 seasons! I’d love to see a fully animated arc for her if possible and I really hope we get to see Azula as an Adult, along with Aang and the rest of his crew, in the 2025 animated Avatar movie. I personally don’t ever want Azula to have a 180 change into being a good guy as I see her becoming more of an anti-hero in the future who perhaps joins the Avatar team and is nice to people…. sometimes hahaha! 🔥

I worked with Jazmine on this animatic and it was such a great experience! She took on all the details I wrote up for this Azula song and brought my vision to life! Jazmine made a lot of clever choices with Azula’s positioning and the camera angles/movements throughout the song so a cookie goes to whoever can understand and interpret the meaning behind her brilliant choices for the visuals!

The fact that this is all going on in Azula’s head probably explains why nobody from team Avatar except for Zuko is in this. Without them, there’s nobody to stop her.

Giving Mai a scar on her right eye to match Zuko's left eye is next level wickedness on Azula's part

I’ve enjoyed the power of Azula’s tragedy. She was by the fire nation’s standards the perfect solider, leader, and ruler….and it completely destroyed her and her life. She’s the symbol of how unsustainable that sort of society is.

"I was mommy's little monster, and I hated she loved all his weakness while fearing my strengths." Man that line hits so hard. It's ironic really. Zuko always wanted their father's love and aproval, while Azula wanted the same from their mother.

I always thought when it came to Zuko and Azula it's like watching two practitioners walk on a tightrope over a ravine leading into an abyss. The difference was Zuko had a safety net in Iroh and Ursa to a lesser degree to catch him, due to him failing so many times. Azula on the other hand had no one, and while she had done this so many times effortlessly, the possibility of her falling was unthinkable until it finally happened, but the problem was no one was there to catch her, and so she descended into the abyss.

I think even the people of the fire nation would've feared her if she became the 'phoenix queen'.

If they ever make an ATLA musical, this would be PERFECT for an Azula “villain” song

“And I hate that she loved all his weakness while fearing my strength.”

That’s it. That’s Azula perfectly summed up. No line can encapsulate her character better than this one, pack it up folks.

-plus we all know most of the Fire Nation would be asking the same question too-

Azula's deserve a better life. She's just a child broken by her twisted father and a cruel world.

Something I noticed and quite like is how when Azula talks her feelings towards Ozai and Ursa she uses past tense for Ozai, "I adored him", and present for Ursa "I hate that she loved all his weakness while fearing my strength." It suggests she either she perhaps lost or grew out of her adoration for her father, whereas for Ursa she's still jealous of the love and attention Ursa gave to Zuko.

I think Azula is the most unhappy character in the Avatar universe. As a child, she faced emotional neglect from her mother and psychological abuse from her father, was then rejected by her friends and father, defeated by a brother she was taught to consider "weak, " and then went crazy and spent a year locked up in an asylum.
Then she finds out that her mother has got herself a new daughter. Imagine how Azula felt then? And after everything, she is still absolutely alone and cannot accept help because of her traumas and her thinking, perverted by her cruel father. And this is all in childhood/adolescence, when the personality is still unstable
This is the saddest story in this cartoon universe. The second - in my opinion, are the stories of Amon and Tarrlok and Lin Beifong.

This immediately joins the ranks of fantastic Avatar fan songs, right up there with "Outmatched, " "In Your Eyes, " and "The Last Waterbender."

A song worthy of the Princess of the Fire Nation. Her flame burns with the blue spark of the Phoenix Queen.

Now, bow to the Princess of the Fire Nation!

I will always believe that Azula's mom didn't see her as a monster, but knew how young she was to firebend, that her father would use her as a tool and was scared for her. I will agree that Ursa should've loved her children equally and should've protected both of them. If anyone wants to extend this into a thread I'm opened to it. I'll pay for it later.

I love the symbolism (Don't know if symbolism is the right word, I mess up my words a lot.) of Mai's right eye being burnt, opposite of Zuko's burnt left eye, and then Ty Lee's mouth all burnt, ruining her beauty, her pride. Beautiful display.

I LOVE this song and animatic! It fits her so well!

Lets also remember... this girl is FOURTEEN YEARS OLD and has been through so much internal hell that she lost her mind by the end of the series. That fact makes the song even more tragic for me. A fourteen year old girl going through so much internal torture that she completely lost her mind.

I was wondering whether or not this was an AU until it got to the end. THAT was one of the best "It was all a dream/daydream/hallucination" twists I've seen!

The fact that’s it’s her delusion makes it hit deep as it’s what she wants but can’t have when she was defeated
