How to spot a car that has flood damage

I work for an auto auction house. When ever I look at a vehicle for myself, I run my finger inside the the metal above the engine compartment where the hood hinge is and look at the dirt that is there. Dusty road dirt is normal. Dried mud looks like dried mud and that means it's a car that has been flooded, reconditioned and the title has been cleaned by interstate transfer.

I just bought a car for cheap, and let me tell you, this cheap car is a headache. I was told that all it needed was an engine. When I get the car, it reeked of mold, the seats were green with mold, the carpets were white with penicillin, there was even mold growing out of the vents. Funny thing, the engine wasn't ruined, the reason why it wouldn't start was because the alternator was seized, which I fixed for $40. But then a week later, the fuel pump quit. A few hours after I fixed the fuel pump, the module that controls the trunk quit. A few nights later, the modules that control the headlights quit. Also, the AirBag light goes out after a few seconds like it's supposed to, so I guess the airbag system is fine, but the oddest thing, my scan tool cannot communicate with the air bag module. It will communicate with the engine module, the transmission module, the various body modules, but if I try to communicate with the airbag module, all the lights on the dash light up, the gauges go wonky, and the entire CAN-BUS communications network shuts down, and I have to shutdown and restart the car.
