In this video, I introduce various characters from the video game Black Myth: Wukong, focusing on their origins in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West to avoid game spoilers. The plot of Black Myth: Wukong occurs after the events of the novel.

Jingubang: Sun Wukong's magical staff, originally an iron pillar from the East Sea, can change its size and weight at will.
Jindouyun: Sun Wukong's Somersault Cloud, allowing him to travel great distances quickly.
Erlang Shen: A powerful deity with a third eye, known for subduing Sun Wukong before. In the game, he betrays Sun Wukong.
Xiaotian Quan: Erlang Shen's loyal divine dog, helping him in battles, particularly against Sun Wukong.
The Four Heavenly Kings: Buddhist guardians of the four directions, each associated with specific elements and symbols.
Juling Shen: A giant spirit god known for his immense strength, serving as a guardian under the Jade Emperor.
These characters play significant roles in both the novel and the game.
Thank you for watching!

Live in America and when I first heard of this game, got super excited. We got a ton of greek and nord mythology, which is nice in its own means but its everywhere. Having something with Chinese mythology was a breathe of fresh air for me. Plus, it pushes me to learn more! Appreciate this vid and hope you do more.

Honestly, I'm more impressed by the size of his fan in the corner of the room than Sun Wukong's abilities.

fun detailed,
in black myth,

这个细节限制游戏制作师很细心。

For yall english speakere, in the fight between wukong and the three eyed mf, wukong calls himself "uncle wu" And also refers to him as "little yang" This stems from the lore where yang jian is the three eye'd dude's born name, before he was investitured to become a god, and him being called wukong's nephew, is actually lore accurate, cuz his three younger brothers, greet wu kong as a elder (when that happens in the literature)

so basically wukong is mocking him extra hard, by telling him he knows his background,

Thank you so much for this. 👍
We Vietnamese have our own way to pronounce/call the terms featured in the novel, but this is truly fascinating to dive deeper into the world of the Chinese novel that we grew up with and love so much.

Interesting video, I hope you keep continuing this for each chapter in Black Myth Wukong. I watch multiple adaptation of journey of the west, but it was a long time ago during childhood, so a bit of refresher can help especially from someone who from where the lore originates because there is a lot of hidden nuances that probably people outside culture didn't know.

I think you don't have to worry about spoiler. There is a market for in depth explanation of game lore for people that already finished the game. And treating viewer as they know nothing about the story also better in my opinion. Because there is a lot of creative adaptation of journey of the west that probably didn't contain element from the story or even add new element that not found in the story.

This was super useful! I remember watching Xi You Ji (1986) and the cartoon but there's still a lot I don't know or forgot

Very interesting video - thank you! I was actually wondering about all the various characters in the opening and tried googling some but this is a much better and detailed explanation.
It was also nice to hear how the names are pronounced properly by a native speaker. Chinese culture is awesome.

Thanks for putting this together, I am really loving the game and wish I knew a lot of the characters as they popped up.

Also, that video footage of Xiaotianquan is hilarious, the actor is just wrestling with an actual dog LOL

I literally got the translated Journey To The West with the notes on the cultural details missed in translation to listen to before I played the game. It really makes it more engaging imo. Sharing culture is one of the many superpowers of videogames and literature. Thank You!

The opening was really cool. Noticing all the little references to the book and realizing that the game takes place afterwards was quite neat. This video was a great refresher for the things I forgot/missed, thanks!

Reading journey to the west in high school: trust me, there is nothing I don’t understand!

Playing Black Myth: Wukong’s opening: there is nothing about this I understand!

Thanks for this video!
