There are even more twists and turns and details in the study of Journey to the West in terms of its sourcing and evolution, but that will probably take a lecture’s length to go through. This is the super condensed version I’m guessing is the maximum YouTube the platform can take😂

About your last comment, I totally agree! I teach Japanese Literature and often see how people disregard completely the actual facts, inspirations, interpretations, sources, etc. and explain everything under our Western cultural thinking. That is why I subscribed to your channel, whether it is about drama, games, or literature, you always explain the Chinese cultural implications behind it so we can understand and learn about the culture that spawned these entertainment products. Thank you so much for another great video 🙏

You have quite the knack for highlighting the most interesting facts while giving the audience a thorough and expansive coverage. A lot of hard work clearly went into this. Bravo!

This is the 2nd vid I encountered and watched. Totally sold and subbed instantly.

Edited: the historical XuanZang gone as far as Afghanistan not only India. There he encountered the bamiyan buddha statues and stupas and he wrote it in his journal.

P.S. Has anyone told you yourself look kinda like classic Chinese depiction of Guanyin? I think only need a bit make over to make totally look like one 😊

I live in indonesia, listened to my grandpa telling me this story before I my afternoon nap. Later we watched the 1986 show on video, it was super. Listening to this game's opening (Celestial symphony) really brings back those memories.

this is wonderful. I wanted more of a detailed historical video about it and this hits the spot! It's great to see it from a Chinese perspective than a western's perspective of the book, novel, game, ect. It brings in more of a realism to the game than anything else! Thank you for what you do AvenueX!

I think one issue new players might find with the storytelling in Black Myth is that it inherits some storytelling traits of modern games it takes inspiration from like Dark Souls and other action RPGs. Black Myth already gives you a more straightforward narrative and tells you things, but it still has elements you have to "pluck out" from the game by reading item descriptions and investigating the environment.
In the case of the Dark Souls, and in general games made by Fromsoftware, you barely get any exposition about the world. Instead, you have to piece things together from interactions with NPCs and item descriptions.

As someone who grew up watching Journey to the West, and absorb too many Chinese novel, lore and mythology - needless to say this game is at least 9.8 overall and 10 in story, cinematic telling, and culture. My jaw dropped when I saw animations and a stop-motion at the end of chapters

Chinese odyssey played by stephen chow shing chi, I still rewatch the movie many time even now . The best part is when they sing "Only You" that make me rolling from laughing for real when I first time watch it.

Thank you for your research and exposition into this. Keep it up! I hope one of the episodes is about the 80s TV Show even further! It was so popular we even had it in Eastern and Southern Europe.
