Carolina in my Mind – James Taylor

LYRICS
In my mind I’m gone to Carolina
Can’t you see the sunshine
Can’t you just feel the moonshine
Ain’t it like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Oh, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind

Karin she’s a silver sun
You best walk her way and watch it shine
Watch her watch the morning come
A silver tear appearing now
Well, I’m cryin’ ain’t I
I’m gone to Carolina in my mind

Ain’t no doubt in no one’s mind
That love’s the finest thing around
Whisper something soft and kind
Hey, baby, the sky’s on fire
I’m dyin’ ain’t I
Ain’t I gone to Carolina in my mind

In my mind I’m gone to Carolina
Can’t you see the sunshine
Can’t you just feel the moonshine
Ain’t it like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Till I’m gone to Carolina in my mind

Dark and silent late last night
Think I might have heard the highway calling
Geese in flight and dogs that bite
And signs that might be omens
Say I’m goin’, I’m goin’
Gone to Carolina in my mind

It’s with a holy host of others
Standing round me
Still I’m on the dark side of the moon
And it looks like it goes on like this forever
You must forgive me
If I’m gone to Carolina in my mind

In my mind I’m long gone to Carolina
Can’t you see the sunshine
I said can’t you just feel the moonshine
Ain’t it just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Oh, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind

Oh, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
So I’m already gone
I’m gone
Say nice things about me
I’m gone
You’ll have to carry on without me
I’m gone
Oh, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
I’m gone
Yes, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind

The quality of this audio is INSANE for being 50 years old. Whether it's the engineer or James' perfect delivery it is incredible. They don't make them like this anymore.

Lost my husband in December to COVID. Woke up this morning wanting to hear James' kind and beautiful voice singing this song. His voice blesses me.

I'm separated from my husband and grandson right now because of Helene. I'm in Charlotte with our daughter while they arr on Round Mountain with no power. Hearing this songs is haunting. But we won't give up. We are Carolina strong!

The BBC did us all a massive service by recording all these great performances.

My grandad Christopher Heneghan is in the audience rolling a cigarette and laughing in the very first few seconds of this video. He told me you were his best friend while you lived together in London. I had the honour to meet you in Brighton last year and was so happy that you remembered him. I miss him so much but listening to your beautiful songs and getting to see his smiling face for a brief second makes me very happy. Thank you James 💕

He paints word pictures in his songs as good as anyone. What an amazing talent.

The bbc really knew how to record these artists all those years ago. Their sound engineers were just leaps above at this time. I’d love to dig into their archives, they recorded Genesis in 1970 and they are on YouTube and also sound excellent.

He was 23 at the time of this performance. What an amazing composer.

I was an angry 16 year-old dude in 1981 after my Dad (who was in the service) was transferred from Hawaii to Washington, D.C. I left a job I loved, a school I knew and a bunch of good friends that I would never see again. I left paradise for the cold Maryland suburbs and was plunged into a foreign environment full of strangers. I was pissed. This song spoke to me and told me that someone understood how I felt. It really meant a lot to me and helped to teach me the power of music -- and art, in general.

As a native from North Carolina, the 1st time I heard this song it gave me chills. And after all those many years ago, it still gives me chills. James has a wonderful voice!!!

These BBC sessions of Taylor's are something else, sound-wise and musically.

His innocence with his lyrics comes thru. His therapy for his doubts about his ability
