Bodily Injury Liability coverage is one of the most important parts of your auto insurance policy, especially here in Michigan. Essentially, it covers the costs if you’re at fault in an accident and someone else gets injured. This could include medical bills, lost wages, and legal expenses if they decide to sue you. Without this coverage, you’d be personally responsible for paying these costs out of pocket, and those can add up quickly.

Medical costs and lawsuits can get extremely expensive very fast. We typically recommend starting with at least $250,000 per person and $500,000 per accident—commonly referred to as 250/500 coverage. Depending on your financial situation, you can increase those limits for even more protection.
But anything less than that, and you’ll actually need to sign a form acknowledging that you’re okay with lower limits.

Having lower limits might seem like a way to save money upfront, but it puts you at significant financial risk. If you’re in a major accident and don’t have enough coverage, you could be on the hook for expenses that exceed your policy limits, which could even impact your assets like your home or savings.

Also, if you’re concerned about larger claims, Bodily Injury Liability can work in conjunction with an umbrella policy. This is additional coverage that kicks in when your regular policy limits are maxed out, giving you extra peace of mind in case of a really large claim.
