An ESSENTIAL part of game design is conveyance: Being able to communicate to the player how the game functions and what to do to win. It’s really frustrating and sad to see a fun game with some fresh ideas stumble into some BAD pitfalls of game design.
Trial and error is a design philosophy that’s been long dead ever since the advent of longer games, and it’s for good reason: It’s INCREDIBLY frustrating. The easiest way to lose a player is to remove them from the cycle of struggle and reward. If they’re struggling for too long because of the game itself and NOT their own mistakes, you’ve lost them.
A bad game fumbling is one thing, but an otherwise good game falling into these traps is just kinda depressing to me. They’re the hardest games to give an opinion on

Damn that fire boss reminds me of how I never legitimately beat the final boss of Bomberman 64: The Second Attack. He pulls the same cheap tactic except he attacks where you stand at the same time as where you'll be so you have to run and then stop at a precise moment! So unfair!

This is the angriest I've seen James get in ages, it's actually kind of scary. Dude usually appears to have a cool, level head, even in discussing some difficult or frustrating aspects of a game, but I suppose every man has a breaking point.
