The Ottoman rule has changed in history frequently between the army, Sultans, women of the Sultans, powerful viziers and influential men and women. This was until Kosem Sultan wanted the power for herself. Kosem Sultan ruled for decades through proxies through her sons and Ottoman politicians, many Sultans during her time like her husband Sultan Ahmet I and her sons were mainly busy with the Ottoman harem, while Kosem Sultan was involved in politics, war and peace time Ottoman governance. Until Hurrem Sultan, the mothers and wifes of the Sultan's power were limited to 'Valide Sultan', meaning the mother of the Sultan, having only real power within the Ottoman Harem, and over her children and Ottoman household, not over politics. It was Hurrem Sultan who was the first woman to gain influence in politics and was obeyed in the palace. Hurrem Sultan died during the sultanate of Sultan Suleyman the magnificent, after Suleyman, Selim II, and Murad II's death it was time for the rise of Kosem Sultan, she wanted to become more powerful than Hurrem Sultan ever was and took the power of the Ottoman women Sultans to another level. She would become unrivalled and decide which Sultan would be on the Ottoman throne.

Kosem Sultan was the mother of Sultan Murad IV and Sultan Ibrahim, she played a great part in having Sehzade Mustafa becoming Sultan Mustafa I after the death of her husband Sultand Ahmed I. and also in the death of Mustafa I after the supported a palace revolt against the Sultan by supporting Osman II af the rightful heir to the Ottoman throne after she encountered Mustafa as a threat to her power. Kosem Sultan would spare no one to keep her power, not even the her own sons. In the first period of her power, between 1632-33 during the rule of her son Sultan Murad IV who was only 11 at the time her power increased and she took directly control over Ottoman rule. When Sultan Murad IV was planned to give the army allowance for becoming the new Sultan, it was Kossem Sultans plan to melt precious things in the palace and turn that into money so the army could be paid. She also played out Murad IV against Ibrahim by providing them information about each other and keeping them both afraid and in check.

During her second period of rule after the death of Sultan Murad IV, she returned to politics after she was bannished by her son Murad IV with the rule of Sultan Ibrahim I, because Ibrahim was considered unstable to rule, she did not have many opposition in the palace to keep her involvement in the politics. But Kosem Sultan became older after years of power struggle, she became rivalled by other women in the Ottoman harem. She was considered a threat by the wife of Sultan Ibrahim and the mother of Sultan Mehmed IV Turhan Hatice Valide Sultan. After Kosem Sultan also planned the death of her son Sultan Ibrahim to keep her power, Turhan Sultan was planning to get rid of Kosem Sultan. Turhan Sultan wanted to prevent Kosem to keep her power and plan something against her son Sultan Mehmed IV

While Kosem Sultan was really starting to act as the real power in the Ottoman empire, Hatice Turhan Sultan started to rival her power in the Harem and Palace, this powerstruggle ended on 3 august 1651 after Turhan Sultan dediced Kosem had to go. Kosem was planning to remove Sultan Mehmed IV from power by poison, Turhan Sultan moved ahead and ordered her loyal servicemen to kill Kosem Sultan. Turhan Sultan was now the new unrivalled power within the Ottoman empire, the Sultanate of the Women in the Ottoman empire ended soon afterwards with the death of Turhan Hatice Sultan.
