The British Military just announced that they were adopting a new service rifle to augment the L85. The Knight's Stoner - 1 (KS-1) is being adopted by Royal Marine Commando and Special Operations Soldiers as the L403A1.

Yes, for anyone wondering about the cost, remember there's 10 years' worth of government procurement process and documentation to account for before the company can even bid for a contract, all of which needs to be recouped by the vendor in their pricing. It costs millions just to get into the frame for a bid, and no guarantee of any contract.

That contract likely involves spare parts, additional magazines, armourer training and other supports, perhaps cleaning kits etc. I’m not saying military contracts are efficient expenditures but I am saying there is more to them than just the guns (and optics and suppressors in this case).
