To make things look simpler, you can replace 6^8 with x. So now you have
6^9-6^8 = 6(6^8)-6^8 = 6x - x = 5x = 5(6^8)

What helps me is after breaking it into 6*6^8 - 6^8, to replace 6^8 with X. Then it becomes 6X - X. Easy to simplify to 5X. Then replace the X with 6^8 and you get 5(6^8) or 5*6^8.

With anyone struggling, what I do is first you would take out the greatest common factor which would be 6^8. That would leave you with 6^8(6-1) because u still have a 6^1 because 6^9 -6^8 is 6^1 or 6. Since you have -6^8, that would just be one 6^8 but since it's negative you would have -1. After that you simplify what is in the parentheses where the 6^8 (6-1) would equal 6^8 (5) or 5 • 6^8

You can also think of it as each power higher is 6x greater. so 6^9 = 6x6^8. Then just subtract 6^8 to get the answer.

You get 1 when you divide equal exponents.. 6⁸ / 6⁸ = 6⁸-⁸ = 6⁰ = 1.
You need to resolve each statement before simplifying. He skipped a few of steps. Like this one for instance.
