I love the ambilight when gaming and watching movies. It's immersive

So far this is the only review I've found that goes into practical use cases relevant to me. Thanks!

I'm a Ambilight sucker also. No-one excepts me run Philips when visiting friends TV:s. I always feel like i'm missing something watching other tv's. It gives alot more immersion when looking at movies and thriller type of TV series. I would't use it looking at sports and news. It's more when your room is totally dark and ambilight gives alot of pop on the wall.

I bought a 49 inch Philips with ambilight 2017 and its still working perfectly with just 1 minor repair before 1 month (something went wrong with the turning on/off) and the ambilight WORTH IT believe me.... even if its only doulbe sided.. when its followin the picture on the sceen, the whole wall is colored and the effects are very good!

I bought a TV with ambilight years ago and it was reaaly nice, but the experience was less than perfect when we had some shelf obstructing part of the "light show" :D
When I moved later I didn't bring my TV along, and on the existing Samsung TV i just added white LED strip to the back - it still is nice to have more contrast.
And now at my usual shop the only TV with 120Hz at 43" is a Philips, probably will buy that :]

Just got an ambilight tv. Thought it was a gimmick when I saw it in the past but thought I'd give it a go when I needed to replace my bedroom tv. I think it's great. Was looking to see how I can achieve it with my downstairs tv

2008 Ambilight. I got it in '08 and still have it. Nothing I have bought even comes close to the HD 3D-like picture without using 3D glasses! I don't know how Philips does this, but it's got to be the best picture ever! The Ambilight was a nice feature, but it's nice to switch it off at times; it gets to be too much, especially at night. But still, I'm just about to buy a new model to see how it compares to my 2008 model! My Samsung TVs (and the 3D version), Hisense, and LG have been absolutely no match for this Philips. It's absolutely incredible to think Philips cracked this way back then! It's a picture you have to see in person. Showing them on videos, you don't see the depth and quality of the people or, say, rocks, etc., in the landscape backgrounds. It's mind-blowing for such an old system!

We have both an Ambilight and Philips Sync box on another screen. Ambilight is by far the best as an all in one solution with options to expand. I'm considering using the Ambilight for my computer monitor in the future. One drawback of Ambilight might be inability to control as a hue light. Example: setting all the lights in a room to a color via the Hue app. Although i have not tested this yet.

The thing i found it works best on are live concerts. I've got a good collection of concert Blu-rays and it works fantastic with the concert lighting, strobes, flame throwers, lasers etc. really brings any gig out onto your wall.

Thank you Scoby, very much appreciate your summation, for myself - Ambilight has *never* been on the cards, but purely for economic reasons!
That said, I am currently planning and researching homebrew solutions of various calibres.
As a geek and programmer, one particular approach is by using a pseudo wallmount approach, but where the immersion comes from a reverse digital projector displaying a modified image. This has the potential for a a lot of choices of presentation styles and immersion types, up to an including projecting to a curved surface and computer generated backdrops with enough fidelity to not only provide ambience but actual higher-red content.
The display itself is more like a super high-res foveated zone, and the projection provides peripheral vision!

Imagine a space game where your eyes and cockpit/hud are there in 8k, but the stars or asteroid field your flying through is presented outside of that area ... like a low-rent holodeck!

Using the tv on a stand, the 3 ambilight set up is quite suitable, on a white wall.

Ofcourse it's worth it. I'm so happy with my oled Phillips ambilight.

The only use case I could come up with would be shimmering digital signs to grab peoples attention in a commercial environment such as a retail store. If I had that on my actual TV at home, it would go like this "wow, that's a cool effect".... 5 minutes later "how do I turn it off?"

Does Ambilight only work if tv is against a wall? Would it work if its used within a TV bed where the tv is not against the wall?

Thanks @scoby tech for this detailed explanation but I have a question for you which I'll be very glad if you can also give me a detailed response....
Is the 2024 Philips 65pml9009 a good TV in all ramifications that you can recommend considering its OS/screen, panel, longevity, etc....?

Great timing. I’m looking at getting a 50” ambilight, primarily for my PlayStation 5 and movies. I’m upgrading from my 2007 hd ready Samsung TV.

I’m pretty close, to getting a 50”. I’d love to get an ambilight OLED but I just can’t afford it.

Where can I find one of these in the u.s?

I'd really love to buy one, but I'm afraid as in my case, I cannot place the tv in front of a wall. It should be in front of a window. Somebody has any experience with the Ambilight when it is not directly next to a wall?

I have the Govee immersion set and I can't watch any good movie or play a game with ambilight anymore....once you get used to the lights and calibrate it correctly there is no way back because it adds so much to the immersion....especially scifi and horror films!
