This video covers ICT theory topics such as digital devices, storage media, RAM, ROM, wireless systems, online communities, and monitoring individuals through digital devices.

[00:00] This video provides a revision for the ICT theory paper, focusing on digital devices and storage media
- Unit 1 digital devices has 10 videos, with emphasis on storage media
- Storage media includes disk drives, solid state drives, and optical disks
- RAM and ROM memory are used to store and fetch instructions quickly
- RAM is volatile and loses data when power is turned off

[02:29] RAM affects computer performance and virtual memory slows it down
- More RAM allows for more programs to be opened simultaneously
- When RAM is full, virtual memory takes space from secondary storage, slowing down the computer
- ROM stores data permanently and is used for booting the system
- PROM and EEPROM are programmable ROMs
- Flash memory is a type of EEPROM
- Factors affecting data transfer include transfer method, interference, blockages, and distance
- Wire connections have more bandwidth than wireless connections
- Cable connections can act as shields from interference
- Walls and furniture reduce the strength of wireless signals
- Wireless systems consist of wireless access points and other components

[04:56] Standalone devices can connect through switches, wireless access points, gateways, and boosters
- Switches have ports that connect devices through a cable
- Wireless access points can be connected to switches for wireless access
- Gateways connect different networks
- Boosters amplify signals to extend range
- Ethernet cables need boosters every 100 meters
- Wired connections are faster, more secure, but less portable
- Wireless connections are cheaper, portable, but slower and affected by interference
- Unit 3 covers internet protocols

[07:25] The internet is an interconnected network of computers that uses protocols to transfer data
- Protocols are rules that allow the exchange and transmission of data between devices
- HTTP, FTP, SSH, IMAP, VoIP, and XMPP are some of the protocols used
- The internet has impacted working practices by enabling collaborative and flexible working
- Collaborative working allows work to be split into individual tasks, but may lead to reduced image of the big picture
- Flexible working allows employees to work at their preferred time, but may result in difficulty coordinating with others and lack of face-to-face interaction

[09:52] Online communities connect people with similar interests through social networking sites
- Different online communities have different functions and features
- Social networking communities like Instagram and LinkedIn connect people with shared interests
- Common features of social networking sites include profiles, friend/follow/subscribe options, stream/wall/timeline, likes/reactions, sharing, and comments

[12:21] Social networking communities allow members to post updates and categorize content
- Tags help categorize content for easy search
- User suggestions recommend content and users based on interests
- Online gaming communities allow members to play together and have social media links
- Online work communities allow collaboration with features like cloud storage and messaging
- Virtual learning environments allow students and teachers to learn together with tools like quizzes and document editors
- User-generated sites are managed by members and can include wikis and forums
- User-generated content is made by site or community users and can include video or photo sharing.

[14:49] Summary: Social media sites allow sharing of content, while blogs and vlogs create online diaries. Digital devices can monitor individuals.
- Social media sites have features like profiles, content management systems, tags, comments, and ratings
- Blogs and vlogs are used to create online diaries and share events with others
- Social bookmarking sites have features like social networking, third-party integration, tags, and user accounts
- Digital devices like CCTV, automatic number plate recognition, ID cards, IP or MAC addresses, and GPS data can be used to monitor individuals

[17:16] Advantages and disadvantages of using facial recognition technology
- Advantages include finding lost people, identifying criminals, and keeping travelers safe
- Disadvantages include breach of privacy, high expense, energy consumption, and making people feel uncomfortable
- Search engines compare user-entered words with a database to display closest results
- Search engines have features such as keywords, search types, search tools, autofill, and synthetic syntax
