Cleaning TDI VNT Vanes: On-car Vs. Bench

This video compares cleaning your (ALH/BEW/BRM) TDI VNT vanes on car through the EGR port versus removing the turbo and disassembling. I had always been curious how well the on-car did so I figured this would be a great comparison.
Great indication on the VNT vanes needing cleaning is usually overboost codes or limp mode after hard acceleration in 4th-5th. As you could see in this video about mid travel the vanes would stick when getting pulled down with vacuum and wouldn't return all the way back up.

WOW thats proved the point. I have a sticky VNT which keeps throwing my VW van into limp mode. I have the EGR removed to try the oven cleaner trick but it clearly needs to be removed. Sadly I have no flash garage only my driveway to work in. So to get to a VW van turbo to remove and replace is a 2 day job under the van!

I have 11 years and 194000km of driving and my turbo is only now starting to stick, after seeing the on car cleaning I have decided just to buy and have installed a new turbo, at least that way I can hopefully get another out of it, thanks for your video, I was considering a mr muscle quick fix but realised it would only be a temporary fix. (Car is a 2009 VolkswagenTransporter T5)

The BLS Borg Warner faces the other way. Hot side is left if your looking from the hood side

No issue with oven cleaner rolling back into the aluminum head from the EGR port and damaging it, I guess. I still think I would take it off and clean it like your second example.

I appreciate your video and subscribed. Do you think the oven cleaner is safe for the seals inside the turbo?

Aren't some oven cleaning products corrosive to some of the alloys in a turbo?
Or is there no aluminum on the hot side of a turbo?

Hi, thanks a lot for This video. Can I use the WD-40 to clean it on the car?

Don't mine fit the 3rd time in my alh Jetta 230000 miles. Easy as oil maintenance

How would you go about installing an Egt probe in one of these turbos? I’ve been looking around but nobody has a good idea on how to do it. Some go through the egr port and others drill a hole where the exhaust runners merge.

Excellent video pal 👌🏼 Are you using brake cleaner spray to clean inside the turbo?

I have a question in regards to using oven cleaner will the seals on the turbo resist the cleaner?
