DIY: How To Replace F150 Clockspring To Fix Steering Wheel Buttons 2015+

Follow me to see how easy it is to replace the clockspring on your 2015 or newer F150 or F250 and get the steering wheel buttons working again.
On my 2015 F150 the buttons were intermittently working. Most of the time pressing a button would do something else entirely.
The tools you will need are a 10mm socket to disconnect the battery, a 24mm or 15/16 socket to remove the steering wheel, a 7mm socket for the steering column cover, a flathead screwdriver for prying, and a thin rod to remove the airbag. Small hex wrenches or a meat thermometer would also work for that.
The entire process should only take 30 minutes or so if you take your time. The steering wheel bolt is only tightened to 40lb ft, or "extra snug" if you're not using a torque wrench.
My clockspring was Ford Part# HL3Z-14A664-B. You may have a different part number depending on option of your pickup.

If you just need the left side button switch you can get one here:

My spray in bedliner kit:
or if you want a tintable kit to make it your own color:

If you want to add extra antitheft security to the tailgate from being stolen get one of these locks:

Fabric harness tape:

I also do a lot of my modifications with Forscan. You can get a Forscan cable here:

Just did this on my 2017 F150. Great video, right to the point. Took about 30-40 minutes - didn't watch the time. Buttons now work reliably and cruise control quit randomly dropping out.

Awesome vid. I ordered the part and this will save me $500 from a dealer having to do it.

Allen wrench works well popping out the air bag too...great video. Thank you so much. Our issue was the horn stopped working. After a lot of trouble shooting....pressing the horn and turning the wheel.would get an occasional toot. This was the culprit.

Thanks man. To anyone struggling to remove the airbag, I used shish-kebab skewers and pulled on the bottom of the panel. Definitely tricky to pull off

Just changed the clock spring on my 2016 f150. Your video made it super easy. I was not able to use a cleaning rod for releasing the airbag because the hole was too small. I had to use a smaller diameter rod. Other than that, it was so easy. I wish I had done this three years ago.

This was awesome, no stupid intro just what I needed without the fluff….THANK YOU. It worked perfectly, got the clock spring online from Village ford or something like that since it was $75-100 cheaper than my local dealer.

Thank you for this! Super helpful.
One thing to note for others is that there are different models of clocksprings. Oreilly's sold me the only type they had which was the incorrect one. They do vary if you have a heated steering wheel or not. I ended up having to purchase one online since no local stores had the correct version for the heated steering wheel. Part HL3T-14A664-A is non-heated and part HL3T-14A664-B is for heated.

Thanks for saving me a pile of money on this DIY repair. Great video. Only tricky part for me was I couldn’t figure out how to disconnect the horn wire and didn’t want to break the connector so I just left it plugged in and it was no problem. Thanks again!

Very straight forward. Buttons have been hit and miss on the menu system for awhile, now the cruise buttons went crazy today. Time to bite the bullet. Thank you for posting this. 2nd vehicle to do this. Chevy Silverado first and now my F150

Just took a 1400 mile trip in my ‘16 and was having issues with the left hand buttons. Perfect starting place for me to troubleshoot. Thank you

Thanks for the video. I have the same issue but in addition to the steering wheel controls not working my wipers and signals aren’t working. Would the clock spring contribute to that too? I’ve already replaced the Multi-Function Switch and that was a bust.
