So he took me to his cabin and told me his secret: "I am not Robert X. Cringley, " he said. "My name is Ryan. I inherited this ship from the previous Robert X. Cringley, just as you will inherit it from me. The man I inherited it from was not the real Robert X. Cringley, either. His name was Cummerbund.

We completely shut down the analog cell phone towers in Canada. I think that was a completely stupid move. They work in the middle of nowhere very well. We have a lot of "middle of nowhere" surrounded by huge rocks. Satellite service would work very well in those areas.

Reminds me of Iridium. Satellite phone service. A flop. Billions were lost.

I think it's important to note that cell phones communicating with satellites is not bypassing the internet, like the other examples were. It's simply getting to the internet in a different manner

I can see this being useful to auto manufacturers as they want real-time vehicle tracking. Right now this is done through cellular connectivity but it can be spotty in rural areas and connectivity plans cost money. Apple could just develop their own electronic packages for cars and allow for the connectivity as a feature only for its platform. Relatively low bandwidth but requires ultra high resolution GPS and complete coverage for it to be attractive to the auto industry. Huge new growth opportunity for the company to capture that uses its technology.

Whatever happened to Amazon's Satillite Internet idea. I haven't heard anything recently about the network they were planning to compete with Starlink.

They might also release additional services like high precision GPS and only make them available to Apple Phone users. 😈

Those companies will run to have as many satellites up there before regulation comes and they're unable to.

Astra Space is also doing cheap launches. Coincidentally Craig McCaw (founder of Cellular One) is on the board.

Company called AST mobile is attempting this. Problem is Satellites have always & will always need LOS. Apple may use GSAT (stock ticker) may be the contract winner.

Here's some good news for you. Note: Beginning June 1, 2022, some Gigabit Pro customers will be upgraded from 3 Gbps to 6 Gbps symmetrical speeds. All Gigabit Pro customers will be upgraded to 6 Gbps in the coming weeks.

Starlink is awesome for people living in outlying areas.

I don't think so, for a device to connect with a satellite it needs a clean line of sight, communications struggles under a roof.

No - just no... It is extremely expensive and only usefull for a very limited users - add to that the need for a lot larger antenna - no.. It is a niche product. There may be an iPhone with satellite capabilities - but not as general solution.. It makes no sense what so ever!
