The Fabled Land of Ultima Thule

Показать описание

Thule is a mystical lost island discovered by the Greeks navigator Pytheas in 320 BC, and later writers reported strange, blue-skinned Viking-like warriors living there. Further legends told that these people waged an eternal war against underground dwarves. All on this island, Ultima Thule… draped in a foggy mist, forever lit by an undying sun.

Personally, I lean towards Iceland. There is a lot of strangeness up in our part of the world (I'm Norwegian), if you study old maps. My grandfather was a collector and I have inherited some of them and I have medieval maps showing land bridges to Greenland and all kinds of strange things. Most of them also show Ultima Thule, some of them just naming Iceland or Svalbard (in later maps) as Ultima Thule

I'm reminded of the David Bowie song, 'The Supermen'.

When all the world was very young,
Mountain magic heavy hung.
The supermen would walk in file,
Guardians of a loveless isle.
Then gloomy-browed with super-fear,
Their tragic, endless lives could heave nor sigh.
In solemn, perverse serenity,
Wondrous beings, chained to life.

I love that you made mention of the Hollow Earth with the "twenty finger high" fierce dwarf warriors! I can't wait for more Hollow Earth material! As it was about 10 years ago, you have made it my guilty pleasure anew! Gracias!

Theres also a river called "Thul" in Norse Mythology and it’s one of the 12 rivers which originate from the Hwergelmir spring in the middle of Niflheim.

I think Thule is the Penninsula part of Scandinavia, Norway and Sweden, if not just the island Smøla in Norway, once much bigger. But Norway and Sweden was often believed to be a big island at the time, which was even believed by people from there, the goths who called it Scandza and said that it was a great island. The idea that it was so prosperous I believe comes from the Bronze Age when Scandinavia was the richest in northern Europe due to their amber trade. It would be a mysterious place for those who lived in the south, but they'd know of how rich is was based on the wealth of the amber traders they'd meet, clad in decorated bronze like the Troyans.

Culturally it also fits with how the thuleans and hyperboreans are described. Strong and uncorruptable is similar descriptions to that of the germanic tribesmen later on, shunning the reliance on farming with a strict honor code, big and well built like the Romans had only seen in their veteran legionaires who had lived and fought in Germania for years. They're always described as far more physically imposing compared to the royal guards of Rome because of the greater physicality they had achieved when living in the harsher lands of Germania living on similar diets to the germanics whoms they found to be so tall and well built.
This of course also matches the accounts of the Hyperboreans as Scandinavia is often believed to be the lands where giants live, no doubt being based on the mountains there and size of people. Once again going back to the Bronze Age, this is when it is believed that the houses of norse mythology came from, with the jotuns, the giants, living in the far north before the introduction of the sami, a much smaller people. Maybe these "jotuns" are the Thuleans who were chased away by the dwarves? Considering samis were much smaller and still are today, coupled with the fact that they lived inwards in the land and not along the coasts, they could appear as earth-dwellers, innlanders. Through myth creation that might relate to the idea of living in the earth itself. It matches the migration history of northern Scandinavia since the scandinavians stopped living that far north once the centralization of the Bronze Age begun and the samis entered the north.

The online game Final Fantasy 14 had an expansion release recently.
The last region in that expansion content is called Ultima Thule: A place at the edge of the known universe

In the Balto-Finnic languages, the archaic form of the word fire is "thule", which is why Lennart Meri, for example, speculated that the island of Thule of Pytheas of Massalia (who lived about a thousand year before the Vikings) was located in the Baltic Sea. There is an Estonian island, Saaremaa, whose Bronze Age meteor crater Kaali has been considered a grave or a prison of the sun in old folk tales. The work of Pytheas of Massalia has not survived, so we don't know much about his voyage to behind the Peninsula of Cimbria to the Sea of Sarmatia and beyond. But according to surviving quotes, Thule was a place where there were no nights in summer and no days in winter, the people threshed their grain inside the buildings and drank wine made from honey. And the people of Thule never stopped showing the place where the sun had once died.

Very interesting documentary and greetings from Iceland :) Few words about the official history: The first Vikings were supposed to come in the year 874 as the first people to live here. But it has always been known islands on the yeast coast named Papey meaning islands of the Papas who were monks that lived before 874. In the recent decades we have found a few archaeology sites who are at least few hundred years older (C14 confirmed). Personally I beleve there is a great story that has been burried like so many other storyes around the world. Hopefully we will one day know them all.

Excellent Mr Mythos! Ever considered some sort of expedition or field trip revolving these things? I've travelled to the polar region through norway & had incredible experiences visiting mountain peaks & caves worthy of Agartha status, they didnt seem to end but continue downwards with their own rivers & so on.

I live in Scandinavia & I am gravitated towards a lot of things in Norse & "Asian" mythology(since about 10 years "full time), I dont travel anywhere these days without it having to do with my esoteric interest, Egypt & Japan has always been in focus but fortunately I keep on learning more & more interesting things & places that draws attention to places around & north of the area I live.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, you are appreciated!
