Two-Stroke Engine - Explained

preview_player
Показать описание
How does a two stroke engine work? The concepts involved showing the two-stroke engine cycle. Two-stroke engines require oil to be added to the fuel since the crankcase is exposed to the air/fuel mixture unlike in a 4 stroke engine. The main difference is a two-stroke engine fires once per crankshaft revolution, where as a 4 stroke engine fires every other crankshaft revolution.

it'd be cool for you to redo this video, you've come a long way

I just wanted to see you explain how 2 stroke engines work and youtube sent me all the way back here. Anyone else watching this 11 years later? Jason, please don't ever delete these old videos, I think they have good explanations and may even be inspiring for people just starting off with youtube or engineering studies or anything like that. Thank you for keeping up the good work!

Just found your channel (I tend to avoid YouTube) via this of all videos, one of your first ever. I thought "who is this kid with a barely broken voice and 3M subscribers?". But you just passed your 10 year mark, and have done so much since this video. You're an inspiration. Here's to another 10 years, whatever that looks like.

would love to see an remake of this with some parts and examples

This must bring you good flashbacks to watch. Great to see how far you’ve gone. Keep it up.

Great! Let me know if you have any questions. I've put everything into a logical order on my website (see description) so that all the words get thrown at you in a logical order.

I wanted to know exactly how 2 stroke engines worked, so I searched, hoping I’d find a video from you. Here I am. Practically all car science videos I watch are from you. You’ve helped me learn a lot. Yay

Ahh direct injection, I don't know why I completely overlooked this thought. Thanks!

In fact the expansion chamber is a good deal more complex than that, It exploits a number of empirical documented phenomena. The "inertial super charging" effect, the "wave transmission" effect that allows for the tuned exhaust effect dictated by the diffuser cone whereby an increase of pipe area causes an inverted sign (negative pressure) sonic wave to travel back up the header pipe to aid exhaust scavenging, and the later added effect of reflecting the positive signed sonic wave back to the exhaust port to plug escaping intake charge the later pioneered by Walter Kaaden that added the baffle cone and was the one improvement that really got the expansion chamber performing as we know it today but not in isolation of the other phenomena occurring in the pipe.

I was digging the channel to find out more about hydrogen and 2-strokes since F1 seems to be interested in those technologies, I wasn't expecting to find such an old video. It's great to see how far you've come since this early videos!

Because 2-strokes use oil mixed in the fuel (rather than a separate oil system like 4 strokes use) they are not lubricated as well, and hence they typically won't last as long. From a theory point of view, at least.

Some of the most efficient engines out there are large two-stroke diesels. I do not currently have any videos covering it though.

They're used to help heat the air/fuel mixture on cold starts in diesel engines; an aid to starting the vehicle since it can be tough with cold temperatures.

Finally, now I have a basic understanding of what expansion chambers are for. Happy New Year

What part do you not understand? I will try my best to clarify. The intention is for my videos to be easy to understand for anyone; my apologies if I over-complicated something.

Best 2 stroke explanation I've seen

Well my experience with this came form ATVs. When I was a teenager I owned a Two-Stroke 200CC Yamaha Blaster and then upgraded to a Four-Stroke 400CC Honda 400EX. The Two-Stroke is all top end high RPM power and the Four-Stroke was all low end Torque with decent power up top too. I will say though, that little Two-Stroke that was half the size felt almost just as fast as the Four-Stroke twice it's size. Two-Strokes have an amazing powerband that literally feels like turbo boost when you hit the right RPM. You'd have to experience it to understand.

Yes, and more power from a smaller package. Assuming all else is equal (and it's not) a two-stroke fires twice as often, meaning "double" the power than if it were a four stroke. Of course, they're not at all equal, but you get the idea.

I just stumbled across this gem while looking for a good video to show my son how a 2-Stroke engine works! Love EE!
