MRI Exams and Claustrophobia: You're Not Alone - Feeling anxious about an upcoming MRI? Approximately 12.5% of us experience claustrophobia at some point, and MRI scans can be particularly challenging with their confined spaces and loud noises. Studies show claustrophobia affects between 4-37% of MRI patients, with up to 15% experiencing severe anxiety or panic attacks.
The good news? Most patients can complete their scans with proper support (often compliments of amazing #radiology staff!) #MRI technology has evolved significantly and many facilities now offer wider-bore machines (70-80cm vs. traditional 60cm), open MRI options, and noise reduction technology that can decrease sound levels by up to 80%. Communication is key to managing anxiety. When scheduling your appointment, be honest about your concerns. Radiographers are trained to help and can offer various accommodations:
• Detailed explanations of what to expect #MedicalImaging
• Virtual tours/videos of MRI environment beforehand
• Positioning feet-first when possible (less confining)
• Music, audiovisual entertainment, relaxation techniques
• Allowing a support person to remain in the room
• Providing a call button so you maintain control
.
Some facilities offer "supportive instruction" – a technique where radiographers maintain reassuring communication throughout your scan, providing updates between sequences and checking on your comfort level. Your medical team wants your experience to be positive. Don't hesitate to ask questions or request accommodations that will help you complete this important diagnostic procedure comfortably.

i had one 12 years ago, I had to be removed because I had to move my shoulder, I spent a few minutes outside and the tech said "we are almost done-just 5 more minutes" so i went back in. Last year I needed another, I touched both sides of the MRI with my shoulders, and my face and chest were so close that it was very freaky, I stayed in for the full ride, 35 minutes, and I will never have another inside MRI, if I need another it will be the stand-up kind. I've also had this kind as well!

I’m narcoleptic and I usually fall asleep in it. I’m also hearing impaired so to me the loud thumping others hear is just a quiet soft rhythmic beat that lulls me to sleep. lol

I've had 2. I thought it'd be a nightmare, but I closed my eyes, did deep breathing, and it was fine.

I've had over 30 MRIs. Never an issue util my last one before total shoulder replacement. I freaked out. Valium made me not care I was being shoved into a tube...

I still have flashbacks to the one where my head was enclosed and I felt so panicked and wanted to claw my way out. I cried so much when I got out and it was only 7 mins long felt like time stood still.

I was in one for 1.5 hrs & am super claustrophobic. Had to tell myself many times to grin & bear it. It helped a lot that the ct tech would tell me every so often how much longer to go.

Thank goodness I’m not claustrophobic. But there would be trouble if the machine was 10’ high.😂

I started shaking while gettin one n I just couldn't control it. Actually, the more I tried, the worse the shakin got. So they gave me some kinda relaxant that calmed me down a good bit.

I had a couple of MRIs in the late 90s and it was pretty bad. Fortunately (?) in 2008 I had a pacemaker installed. No more MRIs for this old man!

Piece of cake, however, about 10 years ago I had one on my head and it was a bit more invasive. They put a metal cage over my head that was so close that I could lick it had I had the desire to do so. That couple with the other 1 hr, 15 minute scan time was a bit much
