Thank you for including Johnny Carson on this list. Sometime in the late '80s I went to the upscale Palm restaurant in West Hollywood for dinner with my friend, Clive Davis. As Clive and I were being seated in the booth next to Johnny Carson, I must have looked at him a second too long because he shot me an absolutely evil "dirty look". I definitely wasn't staring at him like some hick tourist from out of town, but you'd think by that point in his career he'd have been used to people noticing him in public. I stopped watching the Tonight Show after that chilling experience. Years later, I heard Ed McMahon say that Johnny was a "mean drunk" and I immediately understood that I probably caught sight of him after he had polished off a few drinks with his dinner.

I’ve heard that for sure about Crawford, Carson, Brando, & Crosby.
It’s always bothered me that well-known comic actors like Chevy Chase (the most infamous), Bill Murray, & Will Ferrell are all supposed to be huge jerks. I’ve heard Bruce Willis is the worst.

On the flip side, aren’t Keanu Reeves, Adam Sandler & Johnny Depp supposed to be very nice in real life?

I've heard Bing Crosby was an abusive father. Although he was a good singer. Frank Sinatra was a good singer too, but a jerk.

My husband is from rural eastern North Carolina. He's related to Ava Gardner. Her first husband was Mickey Rooney, who once visited Ava's family. I met some of the family members who met him. They all said he was a jerk and that he smelled.

Basically this should have been titled jerks of the silver screen. Rather I can think of many contemporary actors and actresses who are far worse on set and off set. Tom Crusie, George Clooney, Alec Baldwin just to name a few.

John Wayne was correct, though. No race should be given special privilege without the necessary training, first. And that includes ALL, races.

How about a segment on the nicest people in show business?

Frank Sinatra and drummer Buddy Rich were once bandmates in The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Their constant professional feuds were common knowledge amongst those in the industry. During a period of performing together, Frank couldn't understand why the frontmost attendees to their shows would BUST UP laughing as Frank sang his HEART OUT for them. Then, one night, Frank was told by another 'Orchestra member why: From behind his drumkit, Buddy HIMSELF was making funny faces while Frank sang. Their ensuing conflict became so extreme that Tommy Dorsey himself began polishing up the bell of his trombone to create a makeshift rear-view mirror on his own instrument. That way, he could catch Buddy in the act of his shenanigans. Years later, though, Buddy and Frank became best friends.

People who grow up in poverty tend to fear losing their money no matter how wealthy they become. Charlie Chaplin grew up in extreme poverty so we can cut him slack for that. For the record, Elia Kazan testified before the House Unamerican Activities Committee not because he was so patriotic, but because he feared losing his career. (He never regretted doing so BTW.)

I met Mickey Rooney in the early 90's in Stamford Ct. He was doing a play backside to a restaurant I worked at. I heard he was in the alley and went out to say hello. I had to be quick, so I said my hello, yada yada and ran back in. I was told later that he was ripping me apart after I went back inside. WTF?

Crosby's reputation as a sadist is well earned. He was a horrific parent and cruel husband. Other than that, he was a wonderful human being.

Kind of hard to pick #1. They can all just work at being bad seeds as well as good actors.

Joan Crawford was the jerkiest of all jerks to her daughter! Crawford was constantly beating her up to a pulp for not following mommy's expectations! If my mom was Joan Crawford, I would die before I turned seven years old!!!
