Better Understanding LDL and VLDL with Dr. Ben Bikman

In this short video, Dr. Bikman explains the role of cholesterol transporters in the blood, specifically focusing on LDL and VLDL.

He clarifies that LDL is a transporter carrying cholesterol, triglycerides, and proteins, originating as VLDL from the liver. As VLDL moves through the blood, it becomes LDL.

Contrary to common fears, Ben suggests that higher LDL with lower VLDL levels is associated with a lower incidence of heart disease, referencing a study that supports this finding.

I'm a 62 year old male who has been working hard on my insulin and cholesterol over the last 2 years. Eliminated sugar and gone low carb. Optimizated my hormones through trt. Weight has gone from 225 to 185. Fasting insulin has gone from 11.8 to 3.9. LDL from 239 to 197. Triglycerides from 166 to 84. VLDL from 32 to 15. Hormone replacement is 20%, exercise is 20%. 60% is what you eat and when you eat it. Sugar is poison. Eliminate foods with added sugars. Eliminate bread. High protein, low carb. Intermittent fasting 16 hrs a day. You can stuff yourself with eggs, meat, raw vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli. No dieting.

I'm switching doctors. Despite repeated discussion, my current primary care physician still wanted me to take statin to lower my LDL. He also does not appreciate that I am and has been for more than 3 years on the keto lifestyle.

Your lectures are awesome, Ben! I showed this study to my functional MD and he was surprised and amazed 👍🏼

Hi Dr. Bikman, is HDL also a transporter like LDL?
How do we obtain the ratio of high LDL with low VLDL? For example, appropriate strength training? The diet you have been advocating in seminars/lectures? Possibly fasting (short or prolonged)? Thanks for all the work and knowledge you are sharing!

Love Dr/Professor Bickmans videos.
Does anyone know if he has live Q, &A

Can you finish your talk on this subject? It was getting interesting, until your talk was cut off, what happened?

This is comforting. I get an NMR lipid panel at least once a year after fasting 12 hours. My LDL is usually in the 400s. The last lab was September of last year. My VLDL amount was too small to measure, IR markers are excellent, HDL and LDL particles continue to trend to large, HDL 85, and Trigs 123 (still working on that I guess). I have been keto since Feb. 2021 and carnivore since Sep. 2022. It is good to find another marker of metabolic health. Thank you, Dr. Bikman.

Very interesting. Where does ApoB fit into the story? How is it related to LDL and VLDL?

Too short. Lol. What should VLDL be and how do we learn what ours is?
