The shocking dark side of Dubai they don’t want tourists to know
This city is artificially constructed cities that do not grow up or gaily like other cities. Let along with great cities like London and New York, must of the workers in this country are imported from other countries and living workers houses complexes similar to the housing in communist Russia in the 1950s other with air conditioning cable. The transportation that works for people without cars are very limited, this country is a new large metropolitan city and it lack in culture and the city connection. Despite the fact that Dubai is located in the Middle East, you don’t feel the Middle Eastern vibe. The culture is more Americanized from food to shopping brans and everything else. The high-tech luxurious futuristic and bling-bling, the city is a big massive super fun theme park. Its bling and super fun to visit once a while, but you do not want to live there for a number of reasons. The most resident is moving in and out apart from the small percentage of locals. The local culture is not very visible in the city, if you are really keen to experience the collegiate Arabic culture; you have to drive downtown Tadera the old part of the city. Maybe you could visit other cities in the UAE to explore the local culture like Sharjah or alain. The city is not workable, you have to drive everywhere and public transport is a hoax, accessing the metro is a little confusing either you need to get a cab or drive. The metro is divided into two different classes, the regular class and gold class.

Been in Dubai for 1 year working at Hospitality Service in a 5-star hotel. Worked 12 hours a day. with only a day off, getting a salary of 350 dollars a month. Enslaved, underpaid, hard work, cruel management, got my passport confiscated by HR.

I have a friend who’s from Pakistan and he went to Dubai for work to support his wife and newborn daughter. He left just after she was born and hasn’t seen her since, because they took his passport, he’s stuck in Dubai and doesn’t have enough money to go home to see his wife and new baby girl. He won’t tell me many details about his life, but I know that he’s in an apartment with 8 other men, who can’t afford the rent or food. Terrible conditions and no gratitude for what they have sacrificed to be able to work.

I first went to Dubai on 1997 and learned this went on with the labourers. It is sad to see that in 2022 these appalling conditions remain the same. Workers die on these sites and no record is made of them. Shockingly bad. Dubai you must do alot better!

Every word is true: I worked in Quatar, Saudia and witnessed these facts to be true. Visited Dubai and Bahrain, and the same was happening there. Stories of the employment agencies, holding passports, so no one could leave, especially if they had not fulfilled their contract. Wages being not paid for up to six months, so workers had to even send home for money to exist on while there. Low wages, or what we called, starvation wages, amounted to slavery; living conditions worse than any refugees had to experience. Six-day work week, mostly 10-hour days. Bused to and from the job site, taking up more of the workers time coming and going from the job site, so little time was left in a day for them. On my job site there was over 2000 foreign workers, not including our staff. I worked as an Electrical contractor on Contruction, installation and commissioning of power plants. The heat, wind and sand were almost unbearable: had to wear mask and googles outside during certain times of the year. When through many sandstorms while driving, much like a white-out here up North in the wintertime. Much safer in the desert, just run your car off the road into the sand but look out for the Camels. Cheers mates.

Thanks for sharing this useful information. I hate the mistreatment of women who are exploited with no-one to rescue them!

They are too rich to work but have no decency to treat foreign migrants who do manual labour with respect

Worked as a writer and editor for an English newspaper in Dubai for nearly a decade, while my dad worked as a land surveyor for a landscape/irrigation company for over a decade... this is all true... I was appalled to find out how some construction workers/laborers got USD200 (or less) per month, and sometimes their wages were delayed! I did what I could by donating to charities focused on helping laborers, especially during Ramadan... however, that's just a tiny bit of help that never solves the problem. Outspoken UAE nationals fighting for human rights for all get silenced/jailed. They get imprisoned and sometimes the passports of all their family members get confiscated as well. But, of course, KSA is so much worse. Doesn't give much comfort, though, and the usually vocal leaders of the "West" turn a blind eye... for what? Fossil fuels? Weapon sales?

I would never go to Dubai or just about any of the other middle eastern countries especially Saudi Arabia. Countries that have major human rights violations and treat domestic workers badly and pay them so poorly do not get my tourist dollars. It's sad that so many people in the world turn a blind eye to these horrible things. These countries need to clean up their act and pay people they employ very good salaries and treat them right regardless of where they come from. Plus they need to clean up their pollution problems as well.

Everything about the place is false and built on sand. How intelligent people can go there to fuel the disregard for fellow human beings is beyond me

Never in my wild dreams to visit dubai ever … philippines is way better, from the tropical weather, to beaches, to natural beauties, to awesome people, to awesome food, and freedom to do what you like as long as you’re not breaking local laws, people are very friendly and hospitable .Just saying…… its only my opinion
