Use the Lancet along with a Brandt module for a huge reduction to instability and an optimum module for a +75% charge window size, then quantanium will be a breeze.

yeah, the people telling you the helix is not good are either operating on out of date data or are not as skilled miners as they think. With the release of mining gadgets the helix is once again one of the best heads in the game if you know what you're doing. The problem is that resistance was more impactful than raw power so a lancet with its greater resistance reduction was able to crack rocks better than helix with it's greater power. Add the boremax gadget (-75% resist) into the mix and toss some brandt modules on the helix. You know have a laser with greater instability decrease than the lancet, more resist decrease than the lancet, and more power than the lancet. This allows you to break 8k+ rocks on lyria without having to use the RNG dependent Surge+stampede meta that dominated pre 3.16.

Thing is, the Helix USED to be the go-to for mining before Quantanium was added. It has some excellent attributes but it also adds a lot of instability, making a head with more stability better for going after Quantanium.

I think the biggest scam atm is buying the modules… you can easily spend 200kcr on modules, and lose them when a server derps or go afk for slightly to long.

If you read this, please equip the following consumables on your Lancet 1.
*Surge- to boost through the white and get closer/into the green.
*Stampede- to jog across the green and quickly bust the rock up.
*Brandt- for those extra pesky rocks, like what it appears you have here... Brandt helps keep volatile rocks under better control but do keep in mind that Brandt and Stampede cancel each other out.

I've been mining a long time now and not once did I have this happen to me. It appears you either used surge too late or possible stampede that can slightly destabilize the rock. Just try these 3 consumables and let us know how things turned out. Mining is all about timing. Time it too late and your rock might blow.... Time it too early and you might find that you wasted the consumable and have to wait for the cool down to use it again. Good luck out there. o7

Edit: We use Lancet for Quantanium because it's the most sensitive laser available to us. When mining quant, you want sensitivity not power.

I haven't worked out that "the Lancet is the way to go." 😂

I take the view that the different heads have different uses, and sure, if I was out in the Aaron Halo mining quantanium I'd probably use a Lancet.

Crazy man, I just got a Prospector and was starting to learn how to mine as well. In regards to the Lancet, I followed a guide and it straight away recommended me this mining laser, plus in my org people also told me to buy it so I went straight away for it.

I always use the Lancet mining head for asteroid mining, It will crack anything since the rock mass only comes in 3 sizes: 463, 4931 & 5122. Lancet reduces resistance and Instability by 75% and increases the Optimal window by 40%. Surface side mining, you may have some issues with larger rocks but mining gadget and the surge modules work great.

Thank you for taking this hit so others can benefit from what you've learned, Erad! I know what set up to try out once I've saved up for a mining ship now.

I did the same thing. I went for the most expensive and powerful laser thinking it was best. I did along time with it mining Quantanium. I would blow up half the time, it was annoying. I ended up being very good at it, but it was stressful and I didn’t have that much fun. Then I read the Lancet was the one to use and now, it’s actually fun to mine Quantanium. I am going to get a Helix soon and try it out on huge non Quantanium rocks to see how it handles.

Yeah I watched the RedMonster mining guide and learned everything I needed to know about mining.
Lancet and 2x torrents3 and stampede (? Boost 40%) if I’m pressed for time.

Oh also most important thing make sure you have mining laser strength bound to a joystick throttle slider, that making it super easy.

you could also use Stampede with Lancet to boost the power for bigger rocks, then Brandt for stabilisation

Like you, I started out mining using the Helix because of the price. Luckily, l learned about the Lancet on my own by reading the stats. When reading the stats the Helix IS the most powerful laser you can buy but not good for Quantanium. It truly is the fastest laser for cracking rocks because of the amount of power it puts into the rock but it does not help with the "stability" of the rock and quantanium is HIGHLY unstable. The Helix widens the green area (I forget what stat does that) by 30% but the Lancet widens the area by 75%. That is better than anything a module add-on can do (Rieger). The Lancet is also better at the "stability" stat, the thing you see when mining where your power gauge keeps jumping all over the place. The Lancet is more of a "slow and steady" rise in the gauge instead of a "fast and erratic" one. Probably the first big thing you noticed when switching over from the Helix to the Lancet was how slow the "Lancet filled up the green area. It takes double the time of the Helix.

Many Mole miners in my Org will run two Lancets and one Helix, with the Helix controlling the actual breaking of the rock because of its speed, while allowing the two Lancets to widen the green area and stabilize the rock. The Lancets are usually set at zero power input and only give a little help if needed.

In the future, the Helix laser will come into its own when ores other than quantanium will be more valuable. For more stable rocks like Titanium, Diamonds, or even Bexilite, the Helix will blow through them at twice the speed of a Lancet and be just as easy to control.

I heard that the Lancet was best before I even bought a Prospector.

As for the purpose of other mining heads, I get the feeling that they're meant to break far bigger rocks of more stable resources that aren't in the game yet.

The lancet is such a good mining head. Been using it for ages now. It just shows that eading the description really helps.

its slated as a "support laser" for mining, but in the Aaron Helo belt, its perfect as the maximum mass of any asteroid there maxes out at 5122 mass. On Lyria, you need 2 prospectors with lancets to crack the bigger rocks.

It can be done with the impact or helix, but it requires you to get modules to lower instability and resistance.

Was originally looking for a mining laser with great reduction to resistance. After using it for a while, I found out that I need to lower the instability some more since the power spikes are annoying - so I looked for some good modules and found out the Vaux-3's (passive, all 3 slots) are what I need since I do not want to use consumables. While consumables will make mining much faster, I decided against it as the passive Vaux-3's are still good enough for the Aaron Halo and I do not have to re-equip modules everytime I want to go mining.

Edit: The mining laser is the Lancet-1 for the Prospector, which I forgot to name above.

Helex still has a spot but i´ll say it more fits for times when you are more then one miner and you are going for the big rocks that requiers 2+ prospectors or a Mole.
Found out the hard way and then swaped and never looked back for single mining

You were scammed again when nobody told you how to use mining consumables. If you use a Surge when you start cutting the rock (first cut only) it will pop the power up into or near the green zone. It can go too far so don't fire it when you are already halfway up or whatever. A Brandt will have a similar effect like the Lancet with a 75% instability reduction, reducing it jumping around even further. The effects of the consumables stack so you can use both a Lancet and Brandt to make the cut very stable, which is useful sometimes on the second cut when you have a high quant percentage rock with a small band. The only passive module I use is the XTR to increase extraction rate, but the FLTR might be useful for some as it reduces the inert extracted. I don't use the latter though. Remember also that you should be making big power moves to keep it in the green, not small adjustments. It sound counterintuitive, but it's what works. When you get in the green and you see the power climbing toward the red, start cranking it back significantly until you see it start dropping slowly again. Let it drop and then crank it significantly up to start it going up again. I don't the percentages, but it's probably like up or down 20-30%. Point is you have to get ahead of how it's moving or it will jump on you. One other point is if you have not tried the mining gadgets, they are really cool allowing you to cut the big rocks solo on Lyria, which would be hugely profitable on Lyria in a Mole if the Mole wasn't bugged right now. It's still worth it to cut the bigger rocks in a Prospector because you will get more quant in the 100% chunks so your load can be a pure 32 SCU of quant for max profit on the run.

thanks for the video! I actually was having to much trouble mining this quantaniums asteroids. Thx to your video, now I know what i need to do! TY! keep up the good work!

The helix can also more easily break up larger rocks, meaning it is very useful on a Mole (when it works) to push the breaking point while a Lancet works for fine tuning the last bit of juice.
