Could this be considered an ARM wrestle? 😜

If the Qualcomm laptops support Linux and have a build quality that rivals MacBooks - I'll buy two. It'll be a game changer for software engineers

95% of consumers don't even push an M1 Mac to its limits. Computer makers are increasingly peddling Corvettes and Porsches to people who need nothing more than a Honda Civic. At some point, somebody will bring the computer equivalent of a Civic to market - probably the equivalent of an M1 - for under $500.

It's really gonna come down to software. Apple's vertical integration and, let's be honest, fanatical core developer community meant that tons of core apps made the transition quickly. Rosetta 2 was also fantastic at plugging the holes in the interim. Windows will need something as good, if not better, than Rosetta 2 right from the get go, because their market is much more diverse. It'll take a lot longer to get a much larger sea of software ported over, and there will almost certainly be tons of pockets of niche software that will never make it over at all.

I'm definitely pulling for an XPS 13 that can go toe to toe with an M3 MacBook Air though, or a gaming/workstation laptop that's finally useful away from the wall. It'd be great to have choice again.

it is great to have competition. Yet I am a bit sceptical of Qualcomm. Nevertheless its great that apple has to try hard again. M2 was like you pointed out a stopgap.

Apple has control over the entire ecosystem
A super CPU is useless if you don't have software.
Even Intel has learned this painfully with Itanium.
ARM is great let's be honest the normal user doesn't care about the CPU architecture he doesn't know what it is.
Windows on ARM remains a niche because Windows users are used to download an EXE or MSI from somewhere the Windows Store is not yet as self-evident as it is with Apple.

I think Apple is going to release the M3‘s for sure and it looks like they’re going to stick them in the Mac pro laptops and I’ll admit it’s been such a long time since the iMac is been updated. It would be really nice to see if Apple could give that a little love and put an M3 in there as well.

Thanks! Can't wait M3 chips in Mac laptops! And you are absolutely right about competition — more ARM-Windows machines wont let Apple relax :)

One Apples main advantage is the horizontal integration across devices. It's much harder to compete against that

Back in 1995 if you told people that in a few years laptops can run for over 12 hours while being several times faster than any laptop they currently have on the market, people would think you are crazy. We never stop for a second and think about how far we have come. It always amazes me.

Cherrypicking only single threaded performance charts has made these SOCs look more impressive than they are. I mean they are a massive leap for Qualcomm sure, but their performance on multicore sits between the base M1 and M2. Not exactly performance king like so many headlines are claiming. Also, this chip is expected sometime next year with M3 expected to show up next week. I am however excited for the industry to increase the adoption ARM over X86 with hope these better chips push everyone forward. Fun times.

It's not just the raw CPU that matters, all the specialized chiplets around like neural and media engines make the difference. In the olden days, you saw it with the Amiga with specialized chips vs higher powered Atari ST and Apple. Amiga ran circles around because the specialized chips took care of the heavy lifting and ultimately resulted in better overall performance and capabilities.
On top of it, you compare an unreleased chip against a released one, the real litmus test will be how it will compare to the next gen aka M3.

Apple just announced M3/Pro/Max and they're shipping next week, 3nm chips and big improvements in GPU, available starting next week. So Apple is still ahead of the competition. When will this Qualcomm chip be available??

Good video. The one oversight that all videos have made, or potentially avoided mentioning, is that the X Elite won’t ship until Apple is well on its way to likely releasing the M4 series of processors if Apple keeps on its trendline of pushing to annual updates. Also X Elite competing with a 1.5 year old architecture that has already been replaced with the M3 3nm series of SoCs. Competition is great, so I welcome Qualcomm’s efforts. They’ve got a ways to go though.

The problem is ARM has really good support on MacOS and Linux distros like ARCH and Debian but ARM for Windows is a total mess so this chip could be 2 times more powerful than Apple's chips and will still underdeliver simply because the software isn't there. You won't be able to install a Linux distro on those machines either since the UEFI will be locked to the Windows 11 OS and a simple install of Linux won't be possible. While Windows is pretty terrible on ARM so until Qualcomm can open up the chip to allow things like Linux or the BSD's it will be underwhelming for sure.

This is nothing but great news. With four major chip players, (Qualcomm, Intel, AMD, & Apple), prices will drop, quality and power goes up. I really wish there were more than just 2 GPU vendors (serious ones). GPU's that cost up to a thousand dollars is freaking ridiculous.

Glad to see both windows and Mac’s with these great chips. This is going to be great for everyone

How does this compared to the newly release M3 chips?

This is not bad news. This is EXCELLENT news. The revolution is underway. Say goodbye to X86 room-heaters and hello to ultra-efficient SOCs

My biggest problem with arm is it goes against right to repair 😅
